Navy Term

I was hoping I could get a translation for the word Sperr. This was for the German Navy. Any ideas?

Sperr

There is no such word in the German language.

There are numerous combinations, like Sperrgebiet, Sperrfeuer, Sperre, etc. Thus, you must seek whatever the complete word might be to arrive at the right translation.

My best. Joscha

You are right Joscha:

Just checked my Marineworterbuch ..Funfsprachig (MWF)

Sperre English .......barrage

--Balen boom defence
--Ballon ballon apron
--Hafen harbour barrage

One must have all kinds of dictionaries when trying to learn German LOL

This one came from Dereinnhmf bei der Druckchriftenverwaltung
des Oberhommandos der Kriegsmarine .... as you can see I can barely understand the printing.

Sperr

Was the word on its own, or was it the prefix to something.
Sperre can be any number of words from lock or gat to barricade.
Sperrballon is a barrage balloon, Sperrmüll is bulky trash, or oversized junk. As a verb, Sperren means anything from to lock, block, disable or to embargo. So to say the word doesn't exist in German isn't exactly correct.

In the context of the KM, the word "sperr" is nearly always referring to sea mines (as in Sperrwaffe, Sperrbrecher, Sperroffizier etc.)
