Hello to all :D; more follows.........

Zambrow - September 11, 1939.

At 08:00 hours the 1 pul got fire from the left wing and its rear, concerned about the situation the commander of the regiment moved towards the fighting noise with the 3. Squadron. When reaching the forest the poles advanced in skirmish line with the Commander, ppłk Litewski, in the lead; marching along with him were also rtm. Jaczyński, rtm. Zaremba and ppor. Fudakowski. In that circumstance ppłk Litewski fell mortally wounded, while rtm. Jaczyński was seriously wounded. This was due to a tragic incident as the allegedly hostile troops were actually the II. / 71 pp (mjr. Stanisława Knapik) which was advancing in the fog to take its starting positions.

At 08:56 hours the 20. ID (Mot) reported that IR 69 was fighting hard in Zambrow at the rear of the IR 76; thus began the crisis for that German Division. At 10:00 hours the Divisional CP was located about 4 kms east of the station Czyzewo.

Zambrow - September 11, 1939.

At 14:00 hours General Mlot-Fijałkowski, who was in the CP of the 18. DP acknowledged that the 71 pp was on the limit of its strength and considering it could not clear the way east by Zambrow towards Wysokie Mazowieckie, decided to break contact and retreat toward the Bug by Czyzewo.

After delivering his orders General Mlot-Fijałkowski departed to the Cavalry Brigade "Suwalki", but the 71 pp did not receive on time the Directives and continued the attack conquering part of Zambrow; during the attack the II. / 71 pp got fire of rifles and light machine guns from Długoborz. At dusk, the 71 pp broke contact and retreated towards its initial positions.

Zambrow - September 11, 1939.

While General Mlot-Fijałkowski had changed his mind and thought it was possible withdraw his troops with the help of the dark towards Dąbrowa Wielka instead of taking refuge in the Bug. The regiments of the 18 DP were ordered to march along Przeździecko, Drogoszewo, Łętownica, Srebrna. On the morning of September 12, 1939, exhausted from the the night march, mixed and hungry the Poles reached the area of Krajewo, Borowe, Ostrożne.

The German reaction to the breakthrough attempt of the 18 DP was very fast and the 20. ID (Mot) and parts of the 10. Pz marched by Zambrow and Czyzewo towards Andrzejewo; the 21. ID was moved ahead from Śniadowa towards Srebrna and the 206. ID were assembled in the region of Małkini, Nura in order to close the encirclement from the southwest. While the Cavalry Brigade "Podlaska" retreated to Bransk and the Cavalry Brigade "Suwalki" towards Bielsk, escaping the German armor.

Andrzejewo - September 12, 1939.

The new orders for the 20. ID (Mot) specified: prevent rupture of the enemy to the east, leaving at least one reinforced regiment in Zambrow and continue with the bulk to Siemiatycze and capture the bridge over the River Bug.
The remnants of 71 pp had gathered in the southeastern region of Letownica under orders of Kpt. Mariam Liskowiac. The Commander of the 18 DP, Plk. Kossecki, was informed that from Czysewo towards Andrzejewo moved German motorized forces, threatening to cut off the route of withdrawal. From Czysewo the IR 76 was engaged in combat towards Andrzejewo.

Given the threat level, the Polish commander decided to attack immediately and at 09:00 hours rallied forces equivalent to battalion and went on the attack supported by the II. / 18 pal. The Polish infantry reached the heights located north of Andrzejewo and then the Germans returned fire strongly supported by mortars and artillery.

Hello to all :D; more follows.........

Andrzejewo - September 12, 1939.

In this action plk. Kossecki was seriously wounded and the decimated battalion retreated to Letownica, but the Colonel ordered that plk Hertel take command of the division and therefore try to breakthrough the German positions at nightfall, even individually. The plk A. Hertel assumed command at approximately 11:00 hours and decided to attack again with all the forces of infantry and artillery at his disposal. The Polish attacks were triggered at 14:30 hours and 16:00 hours. Despite the excellent support of artillery and machine guns, both attacks were broken by the German defenders by means of massive barrages of artillery and the fire of all their heavy weapons. Here plk Hertel was injured.

After the first assault had been rejected, arrived the doctor's of the III. / 71 pp, the ppor. rez. Władysław Pręgłowski, who reported that plk. Kossecki was still alive in the battlefield, hence was detached a combat patrol with heavy fire support, which managed to rescue the wounded colonel and conveyed him to the Aid post at Letownica. An enemy attack on the rear and right flank was rejected by a counterattack led by the wounded acting commander of 71 pp, kpt. Marian Liskowiak. Then Polish troops established a new defensive position about 1.5 kms south of the eastern edge of the village. There Polish troops held the position rejecting several attacks from all directions.

Hello to all :D; more follows.........

Andrzejewo - September 12, 1939.

At 18:30 hours, with the nightfall, the fighting was gradually ceasing. At 20:00 hours the Commander płk A. Hertel gave the order to break the siege at night and organized a shock battalion of about 500 men directly under his command (force "Taran"). The column started as scheduled at 22:00 hours with infantry troops ahead, if this force did not succeed the others should try to escape on their own. For his part, pplk Waclaw Malinowski (42 pp) and pplk. Lucjan Stanek (33 pp) received the directive to break on their own towards Nuria.

The march went on as planned but soon came under a deadly German fire that killed dozens of soldiers and officers, including the płk A. Hertel, kpt. dypl. Hodakowski, kpt. dypl. Karpiński. The survivors retreated to Letownica.

Hello to all :D; more follows.........

Andrzejewo - September 12, 1939.

In the burning town of Letownica were still some 3,000 wounded and sick, there were no troops in ability to fight. The Commander of 18 pal, pplk Witold Sztark who was seriously injured, being the senior officer there, sent parliamentary to the German side noting that in the battlefield were only wounded soldiers.

At 07:00 hours on September 13, 1939 surrendered the last remnants of the 18 DP. The plk. dypl. S. Kossecki, wounded in the first attack was transported to a German field hospital and conveyed to the city of Białystok, where later came under Soviet custody; his footsteps were lost later in the former Soviet Union (possibly murdered in Katyn).
