Mistel flights over Berlin

Post by Fish »

Hello all, I have a question pertaining to the "Mistel" missions flown over Berlin in April 1945.

I have a diary of a veteran of the 20th PGD, during the fighting near Kustrin on the Oder River, this veteran makes note on 4 April 45 of piggyback flights of Ju-88s and Fw-190s. After doing a bit of searching, I cannot find any dates given that early in April for Mistel flights, the only dates I can find took place later in the month.

Obviously anything is possible, but does anyone have any solid info that could possibly confirm what this guy wrote?

I am by far an informed Luftwaffe guy and hope some of you more gifted and well read members can assist.

Thanks much
Kevin

Kevin,

Going thru recently aquired,"Bagration to Berlin." by Christer Bergstrom;

Around the 1st of March Oberst Joachim Helbig's bomber unit was reinforced by elements of KG 200 which included the Mistel composite aircraft.1st sortie I can find appears to be March 8,4 Mistels assigned to attack rope ferries and pontoons at Goritz.Next appears to be March 31.Six Mistels escorted by 24 Bf 109s made a successfull attack on the Oder bridge at Steinau in support of the German troops at Oppeln.Next reported Mistel sortie is April 11 against the Oder and Niese bridges.I do not know if Bergstrom's book is complete regarding Mistel sorties.It does have several outstanding contemporary pictures of the composite aircraft and an interesting color print of the attack on the Oder bridge at Steinau.

Regards

Mike
