German tactical symbols - How to create? Where to find?

Post by Christian »

I intend to develop a graphic representation of an organic Pionier Battalion in 1942, based on tactical symbols. Is there a software that one can use to develop these symbols and/or is there a digital catalog of such symbols?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Not the right answer, but ...

There is also a review of German tactical symbols at Dr. Neihorster's website

I assume that Dr. N draws his using a standard graphics package.

If you're willing to use US/NATO box symbols, you can simply download some True Type fonts from:

http://support.erdas.com/downloads/symbols/symbols.html

These take up INCREDIBLY less file size than a bunch of tiny little drawings in Visio or CorelDRAW.

True Type Fonts

Post by Tom Houlihan »

The true type fonts are cool, but they have limitations. I do some work on the side making maps, and I downloaded a set of those to use. It may just have been the way I wanted to use them, but they weren't as effective as I had hoped. What the boss and I ended up doing were developing everything on Adobe Illustrator. Now, to indicate a unit, I bring in a unit symbol, attach a size indicator, and type the indentifiers. Also, we shade German units, which you can't do with the truetype fonts. Just my two cents worth. Hope it helps.
