Fallschirmjäger unit histories

Post by Philip S »

Some time ago someone posted the listings of Panzerdivision and Infanteriedivision unit histories and I am hoping that that someone is out there and reading this forum. I am hoping that I might be able to ask for a listing of unit histories on the Fallschirmjäger units. Pretty please.

Sista,

Here is a brief description of the unit your Opa served in and where. This comes from another excellent website on the Luftwaffe called The Luftwaffe, 1933-45 at http://www.ww2.dk/

I am not the most versed person in Fallschirmjäger activity but if there is anything else I can do to help, I am happy to do so.

Fallschirm-Jäger-Regiment 2

Kommandeure:

Maj Schulz, 21.5.40 - 20.6.40
GenMaj Alfred Sturm, 21.6.40 - 30.9.42
Oberst Hans Kroh, 10.42 - 25.6.43
Maj Erich Pietzonka, 26.6.43 - 21.9.43
?, 22.9.43 - 19.11.43
Maj Erich Pietzonka, 20.11.43 - 11.12.43
Oberst Hans Kroh, 16.12.43 - 17.7.44
Maj Wildhagen (acting), 7.44 - 7.44
Oberst Hans Kroh, 7.44 - 8.44
ObLt Karl Stefan Tannert, 8.44 - 9.44
Oberst Hans Meyer-Sach, 10.44 - 2.45
Oberst Erich Vorwerck, 2.45 - 4.45
Formed 26.8.39 with I. and II./FJR.2 (I. at Gardelegen, II. at Tangermünde) from cadres of FJR.1. The Stab and III./FJR.2 was formed 21.5.40. In 9.42 III./FJR.2 was redesignated III./FJR.4, and was replaced in 1943. I./FJR.2 remained in Italy when the 2. Fallschirm-Jäger-Division moved to Russia in December 1943, and was redesignated I./FJR.10. A new I. Btl. was later formed, but this never joined the rest of the regiment, but operated independently on the Western front (8.44 in Ahrbrück, 9.44 under Fs.AOK.1 in Belgium [Albert-Kanal] and Holland [Arnheim-Nijmegen], and was used to reform the new FJR.2 in Amersfoort, Holland). The main part of the regiment was destroyed when Brest fell on 19.9.44. Reformed 12.44 in Amersfoort, and finally surrendered in the Ruhr pocket.

Saw action independently under 7. Flieger-Division, but from 2.43 was part of 2. Fallschirm-Jäger-Division:

Poland (Deblin, Dukla Pass), 9.39
Holland (Den Haag), 10.5.40
Moved to Plovdiv (Bulgaria), 3.41
Greece (Corinth), 26.4.41
Crete (Rethymnon), 20.5 to 2.6.41
Russia (Stalino area), 10.41 to 4.42
Russia (Volkhov area), 4.42 to 7.42
Returned to Germany, 7.42
Organisation:

1939: I. 1-4, II. 5-8, 1. Pak, 2. Pak, Gesch. Bttr.
1940: I. 1-4, II. 5-8, III. 9-12, 13, 14
1942: I. 1-4, II. 5-8, 13, 14
1943: I. 1-4, II. 5-8, III. 9-12, 13, 14
1944: I. 1-4, II. 5-8, III. 9-12, 13, 14, 15 (Pi.)

9. Fallschirm-Jäger-Division

Kommandeure:

GenLt. Gustav Wilke, 24.9.44 - 2.3.45
Gen. Bruno Bräuer, 2.3.45 - 18.4.45
Oberst Harry Herrmann, 19.4.45 - 2.5.45
Ia:

Maj Heinrich Engel, 1945 - 1945
Hptm Zimmermann, 1945 - 1945
The division was ordered formed on 24.9.44, but formation was cancelled on 25.10.44. The newly formed Fallschirm-Luftnachrichten-Abteilung was transferred to the army (85th Infanterie-Division) on 2.1.45.

The division was reformed 12.44 to 2.45 in the Stettin area, from various regular and ad-hoc units and consisted of the following units:
Fallschirm-Jäger-Regiment 25
Fallschirm-Jäger-Regiment 26
Fallschirm-Jäger-Regiment 27
Fallschirm-Panzer-Jäger(Zerstörer)-Abteilung 9
Fallschirm-Artillerie-Regiment 9
Fallschirm-Flak-Abteilung 9
Fallschirm-Pionier-Bataillon 9
Fallschirm-Luftnachrichten-Abteilung 9
Fallschirm-Feldersatz-Bataillon 9
Kommandeur der Fallschirm-Jäger-Division Nachschubtruppen 9
In late 2.45 II./FJR.25 and III./FJR.26 were flown into Festung Breslau and left the division. The division saw combat in the Stargard-Dramburg area, and was refreshed in the Prenzlau area (3.45). Was to have absorbed elements of the 2. Fallschirm-Jäger-Division by 23.3.45, but this was apparently cancelled. On 8.4.45 still had 11600 men in the Berlin area. Surrendered to the Russians May 1945.

The division had served under the following headquarters:

2.45 stellv. II. AK / AOK.11 Stargard
3.45 stellv. II. AK / PzAOK.3 Stettin, Prenzlau
4.45 XI. SS / AOK.9 Bridgehead Küstrin(mius front)
5.45 LVI. AK Zechlin, Gusow, Berlin area

hope this helps
Wolf
