Were any units equipped with this rifle during the Normandy campaign? If so does anyone out there know which ones?

No that I know of, I haven't seen any texts or pictures that supports that there was.

Last night on the History Channel there was a documentary on Normandy ('Hell's Battlefield'), which featured a couple of a clips of German soldiers firing StG44's at Omaha beach. The footage could have been lifted from other battles or training tapes, but it was there.

MP43/44 were definitely in Normandy. As far as whole units being supplied with the weapon I cannot say but don't think so due to the limited initial issue of these weapons by June 44.
