Naval battles for Narvik 1940
No-one who speaks German could be an evil man
Re: Naval battles for Narvik 1940
WOW, interesting article!
In '93 during a visit to my hometown in southeast Austria I had the good fortune to have a chance to briefly speak with an elderly vet of GJR138 who was there during the campaign, and he indeed mentioned the difficulties they faced during the voyage to Narvik. Most notable of what he told me was that virtually every piece of artillery that was sent with the unit was lost at sea, either during the naval battle, or simply due to poor storage on top of the decks (which during rough seas everything rolled overboard). As a result, the unit landed at Narvik with no artillery to defend the narrow channel at the entrance to the port
