Re: Looking for information on a "malgre-nous'
Hi Leger, Regarding your post about it not being really winter in October/November, I think the possibility that he was at a higher elevation and living out of doors might have just as much to do with having frostbite as the actual calendar date. (I remember having mild hyperthermia in October when ...

Re: Experiences of Germans with recruitment for Foreign Legion
Hi Eric, I'm unable to give you the name of any memoirs but I thought you might want to know that the Germans had an entire regiment the 361st 'Afrika' Infantry Regiment that was raised in North Africa from Germans serving in the Foreign Legion that the Vichy government had repatriated. I don't know...

Re: How many soldiers to an MG43 or MG34?
Hi Christoph,
Another fine article from your site. What would be the differences in how MG 42 were employed in a machinegun battalion rather than in an infantry regiment? Thanks in advance.
Cheers,
John K

Re: South African Armoured Division 1943
Hi Mike, According to the links for the thread 4th South African armoured Car Regiment on page 15 of this section or if somebody reads this later 6 from the last page. Thanks for that Phil.
Since the Landespolizei predate the Versailles Treaty when did this change in its role occur or was it really more like the system in the U.S. where large numbers of law enforcement officers are in the National Guard?

Hi Hucks,
Thanks for your reply. The two links were very helpful. I thought there were some rumours concerning his death in a similar vein to that of Rommel.

Re: Different types of police?
If the Landespolizei were absorbed into the Heer in 1935 does this mean there was a massive hiring of new members of the Schutzpolizei to replace them or were some members of the Kasinierte Polizei transfered so that the loss of experienced officers was not as concentrated? The more I find out the m...

Different types of police?
I am trying to understand the roles of the ordungs polizei. If you live in an urban setting the Schutzpolizei do the normal policing and if you live in a village the Gendarmerie do the normal policing, what do the Landespolizei do. How large a town would you have to be in before Kasinierte Polizei w...

Re: Everyday life for the soldier in Russian winter
Hi Guys, I've seen pictures of the type of building that the partisans were using which consists of basically a trench between a metre and a half to two metres wide and maybe a metre deep, with a sloped enterance at one end. Above this three or four logs made up the walls and a peaked roof consisting...

Re: Guerilla Campaigns
Happy New Year Paul, Ivan's War is a fairly detailed look at the life of Soviet combatants and it talks about the partisan war as well. The impression I came away with was that yes assymetrical warfare was much bigger in the East than the West but it was not getting much support from the government ...
