More assistance

Post by Scott Revell »

I have one sentence that I cannot work out:

Er machte den meisten schriftlichen Verkehr, das war für mich eine große Erleichterung, so konnte ich täglich hinaus zu einer Kompanie fahren und nach dem Nötigsten sehen, was ich mir natürlich auch notiertem damit es weiterbearbeitet wurde.

Thanks so mcuh in advance.

Cheers

Here is a colloquial translation: "He saw to most of the administrative details, which made things much easier for me. Therefore, I was able to drive out to a company each day and see to the most critcal issue, which I naturally flagged for further action."

May I present my version: "He cared for almost all of the written correspondence, that was an importat relief for myself, in this way I was able to go out daily to a company to have a a look for the most essentials items, which of course were recorded (noted) by me for further processing..."

The other translation certainly is correct if not even better, only the translation of "schriftlichen Verkehr" into "correspondance" is my point.

"Verkehr" is used for all kind of communication including sexual intercourse, and also for the original meaning: traffic. "Correspondence" or "written communication" is "Schriftverkehr", which here is further complicated by writing "schriftlichen Verkehr". "Nach etwas sehen" has the sense of "caring for something". "das Nötigste": "the basiscs, the most essential things".

The word 'administration' is an all-purpose word, which in the military sense, covers paperwork, office duties, etc. It is often shortened to 'admin'. Since the passage had to do with a military activity, I felt it worked well.

The same holds for the verb 'flagged'.

Take care, Mark
