Pz Gp West Location?

Post by PaulJ »

Does anyone have a precise location for the Headquarters of Panzer Group West in Normandy?

It was established at the "Chateau La Caine" near THURY-HARCOURT shortly after D-Day, then bombed on 10 June, destroying most of its communications suite and killing many of the staff, including the CoS (although Geyr von Schwepenberg himself survived). It was badly enought damaged that it was withdrawn back to Paris for most of the rest of the fighting in Normandy.

There is a chateau in THURY-HARCOURT itself, the ancestral seat of the Harcourt family, but I believe that is not it. There is a village of LA CAINE just North West of THURY-HARCOURT, but I don't know anymore than that.

Details would be appreciated.

Cheers,

I have the situation maps of 7 Army for June. Panzer Gruppe West features on that for 29 June 1700 Hours. HQ was Mittois. XXXXVII Panzer Corps at St. Jean Le Blanc, ISS Panzer Corps at Clinchamps and LXXXVI Corps at Gerrots.

The airstrike that knocked out Pz Gp West's HQ was on 10 June. A few further refs I have found suggest that the location was in the village of LA CAINE, just to the North-West of THURY-HARCOURT.

Pz Gp West, under Geyr von Schweppenburg, was deployed to the CAEN area later in June.
