Hello everyone!
I'd like some info on just how much of a copy the ak47 was of the stg44.
There has been mentioned that the inventor of the ak47 brought a stg44 back home after the war. I would like to know technical details, field performance u name it.
Links to websites would also be useful.
Thanks in advance
Matt

Matthall,

The general outline of the design is similar aswell as sights and the concept of ammunition (shorter casing, normal rifle caliber round).

One could also say that the gas operated mechanism is similar but so are 90% of all assault rifles since '45.

The bolt action of the Stg 44 is more like the Belgian/British SLR design where the bolt locks to the chamber by a "linkage" type design.
The AK 47 uses the the same principle as the M 16 where the bolt locks to the chamber by a "bolt rotating" action.

Summing up one could say, yes, the AK 47 is very similar but I choose to say that the Stg 44 has, in a lot of ways, influenced a lot of different designs after the war which in that same way could be called "a copy" in design.
For sure the AK 47 was first though.
