SS or Panzer?

Post by Guillermo »

Did the SS have Panzer units of their own, just like the Wehrmacht?
The term "SS Panzer" confuses me a bit.

Thank you.

Waffen-SS units got their first tank detachments (then regiments) in 1942, a number of divisions being equipped with a regiment or single detachment. Also corps attached support units also had armor. Assault gun units were also components of various divisions.

Waffen-SS Panzers

The Waffen-SS had seven Panzer Divisions as follows:
1. SS-Panzer-Division "Leibstandarte SS Adolf Hitler"
2. SS-Panzer-Division "Das Reich"
3. SS-Panzer-Division "Totenkopf"
5. SS-Panzer-Division "Wiking"
9. SS-Panzer-Division "Hohenstaufen"
10. SS-Panzer-Division "Frundsberg"
12. SS-Panzer-Division "Hitlerjugend"

The majority of the rest of the Waffen-SS divisions were SS-Panzergrenadier-Divisions, which all had some sort of armor contingent. There were also several SS-Kavallerie and SS-Gebirgsjager-Divisions. Even these had some sort of armor, be it Aufklarungs (Motorized Reconnaissance), Panzerjager (Anti-Tank) or motorized artillery.

Panzer means Armored, or Tank. The Luftwaffe had it's own Panzer Division, the Hermann Goring Division.
