The 2nd Fallschirmjager Division (2nd, 6th, and 7th FJ reg.) formed in Brittany in 1943 under Generalleutant Ramcke was sent to Russia in in late 1943 and there first action was around Zhitomir as a relief unit to the 1st SS panzer Divison. The specific unit was FJR2 under Mahor Pietzonka. The Paratroopers went in as relief on 30 November and by the night of 1st December the sector had been cleared. The 16th Red Army counter attacked trying to reach the river Dniester. FJR2 fought untill withdrawn on 15 December when 2nd Fallschirmjager Divison was flown to Kirovgrad to counter a Soviet breakthrough at Kremechug.
