27.SS-Freiwilligen-Grenadier-Division 'Langemarck'

Post by Massimiliano Afiero »

A new book in italian language, written by Massimiliano Afiero, dedicated to the military history of the brigade and then division SS 'Langemarck', volunteer training Flemish Waffen SS committed mainly on the Eastern Front, first in Ukraine, in early 1944, and then with a Kampfgruppe, in Estonia participated in the fighting on the Tannenberg line in the summer of 1944, alongside other European volunteers of the Waffen SS formations, subordinate to the III.SS-Pz.Korps, covering itself with glory and lamenting heavy losses. After being transformed into a division, the Langemarck took part in the recent fighting on the front of Pomerania and the Oder front, continuing to fight in extreme conditions and maintaining the assigned positions, fighting back when it was possible. The unequal struggle against overwhelming Soviet forces was fought with great sacrifice by the Flemish volunteers, who in the last period of the war, fought shoulder to shoulder with their fellow countrymen of Wallonien, with whom he also shared the last dramatic moments of surrender. Most Flemish volunteers managed to surrender to the Anglo-American forces, thus escaping capture by the Soviets. After the war, returned to his country, members of the division suffered trials and convictions, like all other foreign volunteers of the Waffen SS, guilty of choosing to fight on the 'wrong', groped to prevent the invasion of Europe and the violence of the Bolsheviks.
