Hello to all ; more.............................
Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.
Italy early 1944.
By the end of February 1944, the division's front line had been extended to the Adriatic coast. In the spring of 1944, the fighting in Italy shifted to the southern sector of the Italian front and to the area around Monte Cassino. The line in front of the division remained largely calm. Only the Grenadier Regiment 576, which was on the Liri reinforced by the II./Artillery Regiment 305 as "Group Bode", still had to endure heavy defensive fighting. At the end of 1943, the Ost-Bataillon 412 was transferred to Italy and deployed in the 305. Infantry Division, being assigned as III. / Grenadier Regiment 576.
As already mentioned, in early May, the Grenadier Regiment 576, together with the II./Artillery Regiment 305, was transferred as "Group Bode" to the Gari (the continuation of the Rapid south of Cassino) just south of the confluence of the Gari and the Liri to Garigliano. On May 11, 1944, the regiment was completely overwhelmed by the last Allied offensive around Cassino. On May 19, the regiment, suffering heavy losses, withdrew along the Liri to the Senger-Riegel Line near Pontecorvo.
Meanwhile, the "Bode Group" had been reinforced with remnants of three mountain infantry companies, the 44th Field Training Battalion, engineers from the 90th Panzergrenadier Division and the 334th Infantry Division, but only formed a collection of battered units.
While the position of the Grenadier Regiment 577, had remained largely calm. On May 11, 1944, the final Allied offensive began against the German positions at Monte Cassino up to the coast of Gaeta. On May 15, the 305th Infantry Division was ordered to replace the 71st Infantry Division on the southern section of the front at an accelerated pace, the latter having suffered heavy losses in earlier fighting.
On May 27, most of the 305th Infantry Division was thrown into the Sacco River in heavy defensive fighting. Reaching the south bank of the Sacco, the 305th Infantry Division relieved parts of the 94th Infantry Division in a line of resistance south of Ceccano and prepared for defense. During the night of May 30, after heavy fighting, the division withdrew to a new line north of the Sacco, 3 km northwest of Ceccano, facing southeast, with the right wing resting on the river.
