Post by Prit »

Can any of you kind folk tell me if there was any/much partisan activity in the area broadly between Rostov and the Don bend, at the time of the Stalingrad fighting?

Yes, there were partisans in Rostov-Stalingrad-Voronezh area in 1942. This website has a map showing Soviet partisan activity in the German-occupied territories in 1941-1942. Red dots mark locations of main partisan bases.

According to the map, in November 1942:
Stalingrad area - 14 partisan detachments, 122 people total
Rostov area - 9 partisan detachments, 300 people total
Voronezh area - 25 partisan detachments, 425 people total

This Russian article http://victory.mil.ru/war/1943/war/03_01.html describes Soviet partisan activities in winter 1942/43, including Don bend. It states that:

In the Don bend region partisans destroyed 21 trains, 5 railroad bridges, 2 communication centers and 40 kilometers of phone and telegraph lines. 50 partisan detachments fought in Stalingrad, Voronezh and Rostov areas.

Partisans disrupted operations of the Krasnodar-Stalingrad railroad, which was a very important strategic transport route for German forces. They destroyed 14 trains with German troops and weapons, blew up 20 railway bridges and 37 highway bridges, and disabled 72 kilometers of telephone and telegraph lines.

Hope this helps.
