Generaloberst Eberhard von Mackensen

I would like to know why Generaloberst Eberhard von Mackensen was dismissed as commander of the 14. Armee. This happened officially on June 6, 1944 right after the fall of Rome.
He was also the son of a Prussian general and apparently Eberhard despised the non-German Adolf Hitler. Are these two of the reasons that he was dismissed? I don't have literature in my possession to find out, so I rely on some forum members.

On 23-5-44 the breakout out of the Anzio-Nettuno bridgehead was a fact, this unhinged the entire German Armygroup fighting in Italy. 14th and 10th Armies were forced to withdraw. Rome fell some weeks later.
Apparently there were disagreements between Mackensen and what Heuer calls "seinen vorgesetzten Instanzen (which I interpret to be the supreme command), about the course of action that needed to be taken.
Consequence : Mackensen was dismissed.

One can compare it to Manstein's dismissal or Hoth's dismissal etc.
Mackensen was probably too much of a realist and too outspoken in his opinion.

There is information in the attached Canadian Army Military History weblink concerning Mackensen's philosophical disagreement with Kesselring which was the reason he resigned. See Report 20. The dates are wrong on the access page however; Report 20 covers 4 Jan to 4 June 1944. I'm sorry I can't give you a page number but my copies are packed in the basement until I move. However, There is an index of people and units mentioned and one of the last pages cited for GenOb Mackensen should take you to the right spot.

There are six Information From German Sources Reports- 20, 24 and 27 on the Italian Campaign for the dates indicated and 50, 69 and 77 for northwest Europe. They are all extremely interesting and informative with info about commanders, operations and German O/Bs and plans.
