American Waffen SS unit??

I saw a posting on wikipedia in mention that the SS was attempting to form a SS unit of American prisoners of war, is that true or total bunk?

its true that Himmler put a call for foriegn volunteers before the foreign SS groups were started. he got some from the UK and some from the U.S. It wasnt until he gave the volunteers their country indentiy ( Belgium SS, Finnish SS, ect) that he got the amount of volenteers he needed.

Given the superabundance of Germans and German Americans living in the USA at any one time, allied to which was the fanatical support given Germany by the many Bunds in America, it would have been astonishing if Germany could not have found more than enough recruits for an SS unit from those above types captured and held in German POW camps. However, if they ever did, then I have never heard of it. Perhaps when captured they were more than happy to sit out the war in a POW camp ?
