Gents,
I'm researching this one soldier off of some info from the Volksbund:
Nachname: Schmehl
Vorname: Hermann
Dienstgrad: Gefreiter
Geburtsdatum: 04.10.1920
Geburtsort: Weinsberg
Todes-/Vermisstendatum: 01.09.1941
Todes-/Vermisstenort: Dnjepropetrowsk
Does anyone know what infantry units were stationed around Dnjepropetrowsk at that time? Maybe any other information on him?
And...some photos of him!
I don't know much about him, but his brother-in-law was a super-vet! Poland, France, Romania, Ukraine, Crimea, Kuban, Stalingrad, and later unfortunately dying in a Gulag...
Thanks,
-B

Hello Brendan!
Here goes nothing... As Dnjepropetrowsk lies in southeast Ukraine it's definitely Heeresgruppe Süd and when I quickly looked through an old "Maps of WWII" kind of book I found that, in September 1941, just north of Dnjepropetrowsk was the 17. Armee and just south was the Panzer-Gruppe 1 (Later 1. Panzer-Armee). See links for information on which Divisions that made up these two armies. See if any of those was in/near Dnjepropetrowsk in August/September 1941 and so on...

Just found this: http://www.lexikon-der-wehrmacht.de/Gli ... /198ID.htm
Do you think thats the one, or do you think it could be another?
Its strange, because my best guess was from two postcards of a parade out of Karlsbad. From the date on the back of one of the two, I was able to determine it was elements of the 46ID. That was my best guess, and the 46ID was at Dnjepropetrowsk, but in 1943 instead of 1941...
Ugggh...more research...
