3rd & 6th 6 PzDiv question

Post by Heer Adler »

Hi,

I'm doing some reseach on the early war uniforms of the 3rd & 6th Panzer Divisions but have hit a bit of a grey area with regard to shoulder boards.

I've seen wartime pics of members with and without '3's' & 6's' embroidered onto their shoulder boards, just wondering if there is there a definative answer on this and does anyone have any good pics or examples that I might refer too to help me out.

Thanks
Neil.

Hello

Why should a member of the 6.Panzerdivision have the number 6 on his shoulderboard? Just the members of the divisional staff would have had the letter D with a 6 on it and that would be a very rare view and photo.
Numbers on shoulderboards were regimental numbers in combination with the colour of arm. This would mean a pink with the number 5 or 6 for 3.Panzerdivision and with 11 for the 6.Panzerdivision. You will see these numbers mostly on the normal fieldgrey uniforms off duty and mostly "camouflaged" in the field. From France on you can see them disappear more and more.

Here an example from Panzerregiment 5, 3.Panzerdivision.
