Music in the movie Das Boot

Post by panzermahn »

Hi feldgrauens,

I have some enquiries regarding the music used in the movie Das Boot

a) What is the German song sung by the U-boat men and officers at the party early in the movie?

b) What is the German military march played by the Kriegsmarine band when the U-boat is leaving the submarine pen?

c) Why did the U-boat men sung a WW1 English song (It's a long way to Tipperary) when they were returning to the naval base after successfully navigate throught the straights of Gilbratar?

Thanks for any info.

er... anyhow, I think the answer to 2 might be 'muss I denn' (?). I have the album somewhere, I think most of the music is by Klaus Doldinger (also responsible for experiments in sitar funk if I'm not wrong!)

Hi Panzermahn

I only have it on vinyl (be warned, that march is only listed as 0.45 minutes long!). I can probably burn it to my pc unless you'd settle for an old-fashioned audio cassette!

blimey, now you mention it, yes, that tune was familiar from somewhere... sort of lullaby style thing he did with it wasn't it?

Panzermahn, dispatches will be made tomorrow via floatplane... or something!
