U Boat numbers?

Anyone know the system of numbering u-boats? Does a website exsist indicating the subsequental numbering?

Hi there, Go to http://www.uboat.net for more detailed uboat info, it really is the site for all those interested in the u boat war. I read there that there was a numbering system in operation but as the boats were ordered from the builders yard they were assigned a number, and as they were normally ordered in quite large groups they were given consecutive numbers but more often than not there were huge gaps in the numbers an effort to "fool" the allies that they had more boats than the actual number they did have.
