2 July - Northern Gate captured
4 July - Eastern Fort cleared (about 20 remaining defenders killed)
12 July - Breakthrough of Major Gavrilov group (Major was wounded during breakthrough and hided in ruins and was captured after a short fight only 23 July!)
14 July - Pioneer Barracks captured – ( 7 remaining defenders killed)
15 July - unknown soldier jumped out of the upper section of Terespol Gate with pack of grenades on a passing by column of german soldiers
The information I have as narrated in Will Fowler's Barbarossa: The First 7 Days on page 133 is that Major Gavrilov surrendered with 388 men in the citadel on June 29. I would like to know what sources the museum at Brest, Belarus, uses to establish the claim that Gavrilov was captured on 23 July.

Since the defenders you note all died and not captured or interrogated, what sources are there that they resisted until those dates. What corroborating evidence is there that the claims of the Belarus government are indeed accurate?

Who if anyone has authenticated the writings of soldiers within the walls of the citadel? Were they discovered by the Germans in 1941? Or were they discovered by the Soviets in 1944? Were these scratchings covered by rubble or in the open? What I question is that why would Soviet soldiers write on the walls while they were not yet discovered by the Germans and thus present to the Germans the fact that the soldiers were still alive and resisting within the fortress.

Major Gavrilov together with 1 soldier was captured on 23 July. I might be mistaken but in 1993 a group of veterans of 45 I/D and other units which stayed in the fortress when 45 ID moved ahead visited Brest fortress museum and wrote their evidences. One of the veterans recalled that in late July he saw captured Soviet officer who was terribly looking.
Moreover Gavrilov stayed alive in concentration camp and died in the sixties. He was awarded a Hero of Soviet Union only in 1957 because of the burden of being POW and the hole curtain over the fortress story. I don't know what more evidences museam has, but I am sure there are - it is a matter for special research.
One more evidences is written by Antanas Stankus - a Lithuanian SS legioneir. He was sentenced to 25 years in prison for collaboration and after that term being very old in late 80-s told that he served in a regiment located in Peremyshl city on the Polish side of the border not far away from Brest. In the beginning of July his units was assigned to clear up the fortress. They checked every basement finding only dead bodies many already eaten by rats. But sometimes gunshots took a life of his companions. They located few groups of resisting survivors and burned them out or blowing up all the exits to seal the trap. In late July their unit was standing on the central square and the commander was giving out awards for soldiers. Suddenly they saw a soviet soldier in worn-out clothes approaching them. In a few seconds he took out a pistol and shot himself. When soldiers approached his body they found out that he was blind and heavy burned. Commander ordered to bury him with military honours.
Most of the wall scratcings have been discovered in late forties-beginning of fifties when excavating of ruins started. It was either on basements walls or tunnels. Before the access was blocked by fragments of walls and ruined roofs.
A can not imagine how you realize the authentification of scrathces....
On this page you can find some war-time pictures of the fortress. http://www.fortification.ru/forum/index ... 135&page=6

To Veiss:

Are you implying that Major Gavrilov claimed himself, orally or in writing, that he was taken prisoner on 23 July? In the absence of the written statements, I can assume that the claim of German 45. ID veterans and other units (which units?) is just that: a claim without any documentary evidence.
Antanas Stankus - a Lithuanian SS legioneir...he served in a regiment located in Peremyshl city on the Polish side of the border not far away from Brest. In the beginning of July his units was assigned to clear up the fortress.

From what you state I have to be somewhat sceptical of the story of Antanas Stankus. There never was a Lithuanian Waffen SS unit. At the end of June 1941 Lithuania had just been liberated by Heeresgruppe Nord, of which Totenkopf Division was a part and which never was anywhere near Brest. At the end of June Das Reich Division was south of Minsk and on 7.7.41 the division was east of Minsk. DR was part of Heeresgruppe Mitte. You say that Stankus' regiment was used to clear out Brest without ever identifying the unit. The man's recollections are useless if this is all he stated. A veteran never forgets the name of his unit.

How did Stankus manage to get into an SS unit at such an early date? Was he perhaps a member of the Einsatzgruppe? Had he escaped from Lithuania prior to 22 June 1941 to Germany and enlisted in the SS? I would like to know of his career 1939-45 if you have this information and whether his "trial" was the usual Soviet "show trial" where the defendant confessed his "crimes" to the NKVD to ensure a 100% conviction rate.

Most of the wall scratcings have been discovered in late forties-beginning of fifties when excavating of ruins started. It was either on basements walls or tunnels. Before the access was blocked by fragments of walls and ruined roofs.
The fact that the writings on the walls were covered by debris, if authentic, indicate that the person(s) who wrote them were no threat to the Germans. Were their remains (corpses) found along with the writings and were these photographed together and was any attempt made to identify the remains by name?

I know nothing about Antanas, but many Lithuanians lived in East Prussia, especially near Memel (this town to 1939 was Lithuanian). Also in part of Poland taken by Germans lived many Lithuanians, most of them near town Suwalki. It is very possible that some of them joined SS even before 1940. After june 1941 was created formation called "Saulis" or something like that what means "rifleman" wich cooperated with occupants.

Well, first of all I don't think that this topic should be discussed like a legal case investigation in a court: direct and indirect proofs, etc. .
Nobody argues that organized defense was over on June, 30. Fortress museum has many evidences of the fact that like I told before several groups of surviviors continued to fight mainly in the Eastern Fort. If you need further detailed info on the subject it is a wise idea to visit fortress museum and its research department - this is not my area of research so I can't render you very profound help.
All I know about Stankus I wrote. One more known thing is that before 1939 his father was a big landlord in Lithuania and Stankus moved to Europe long before 1939. Maybe he was not SS. Journalists don't care much about details unfortunately.
Scratch on the wall dated 20 July was found in the barracks of 132 NKVD batallion, this is between Terespol and Kholm gates. There are few more pieces of heroic inscriptions dated different dates of June and July. Its originals are shown in the museum.
There can be no speech about authentification of scratches and its authors because all the defended sites were full of unburied soldiers remains. By the way, very few of them were indentified because of the absense of ID-tags. Also during excavations several military flags hidden by the defenders have been recovered. None of the flags were captured by the germans

Hello to all :D; just to share this little article (another turn in this nut).....................

River crossing and attack a fortified area - Brest Litovsk in June 1941.

In the summer of 1941 the Bug River was the boundary between the General Government of Poland and the former Soviet Union; in the central sector, the river crossed by the city of Brest-Litovsk whose being its fortress divided so that the city and most of the fortress itself, was under Russian rule while only some forts in the Western bank remained on German side.

Located on the road and railway line Warsaw - Moscow the city was a prime target; the Poles occupied it since February 1919 and then it was conquered by the Germans in September 1939. After a short occupation it was delivered to the Russians. By the time of the operations there were as garrison in the fortress 5 battalions of the 6 Rifle Division, 2 battalions of the 72nd Rifle Division, 33 Regiment independent of Engineers, the 132 Independent Battalion of the NKVD and the 17 Border Guards Detachment. In total 7 to 8 thousand soldiers and 300 families.

Hello to all :D; more follows.....................

River crossing and attack a fortified area - Brest Litovsk in June 1941.

The 2nd Armored Group of Generaloberst Guderian (precisely who had taken the fortress in 1939) received the mission of crossing, at the start of the offensive, over the Bug River on both sides of the fortress of Brest-Litovsk, to break the Russian front, and rapidly taking advantage of initial successes, reach the area Roslawl - Jelnja - Smolensk.

The fortress of Brest-Litovsk whose forts were outdated, was protected against armored attacks by the rivers Bug, Muchawiec and ditches with water so it could only be conquered by infantry. To this end the Armored Group was reinforced with the XII AK (General Schroth) with the 45 ID (Generalmajor Schlieper), the 34 ID (Generalleutnant Behlendorff) and the 31 ID (Generalmajor Kalmukoff); it was deployed on the line Koden – Neple to surround Brest-Litovsk and with the forces not engaged there moving between the roads Brest Litovsk - Kobryn - Bereza Kartuska and Motykaly - Piliszcze - Pruzana - Slonim, clearing the ground between the XXIV AK (Mot) and the XXXXVII AK (Mot).

Hello to all :D; more follows.....................

River crossing and attack a fortified area - Brest Litovsk in June 1941.

The 45 ID – Main effort.

From late April to early May 1941, the 45 ID was transported from France to the area of Warsaw and once there it would develop preparations for a possible attack against Russia according to the following order: to capture the railway bridge over the Bug and bridges over the Muchawiec, to conquer the fortress and city of Brest-Litovsk by assault thus enabling the advance of Guderian’s Armored Group and then march along the road Brest-Litovsk - Kobryn.

From the first days of May 1941, the divisional commander and the regimental commanders surveyed the ground along the River Bug in the area of Brest-Litovsk. The walls surrounding the fort were in good condition; the central area was surrounded by buildings of brick structure with several floors. There was no traffic across the border, but the train ran as scheduled times.

By the end of May 1941 the 45 ID had moved to Terespol - Biala Podlaska. The advance guard constituted by the III. / IR 135 was housed in Terespol.

Plan of attack developed by the 45 ID.

On the right the IR 130 with the task of crossing the Bug, then to conquer the south island by assault and prevent the destruction of the bridges over the Muchawiec east of the fort. Then was to press on the southern sector of the city, up to its eastern boundary.

On the left the IR 135 (minus its II. Battalion) with the task of capturing intact the railway bridge over the Bug by a raid, then to cross the Bug and conquer the islands north, west and the center of the fortress by assault. Then was to push through Brest-Litovsk itself, up to the eastern edge of the city.

As for the third regiment, the IR 133, was to act as the Army Corps reserve.

River crossing and attack a fortified area - Brest Litovsk in June 1941.

The 45 ID – Main effort.

The plan of attack of IR 135 was as follows:

Surprise raid to capture the bridge. Upon arrival of the regiment, it would take over the bridge guard, posing as border troops to become familiar with the routine of the Russian guard. The sentry would be advanced slowly to the line of demarcation and the changing of the guard time be brought forward to coincide with the time of the attack to have supremacy over the Soviet sentries.

The III. / IR 135 (minus its 9. Company acting as a reserve of the regiment) reinforced with engineers would cross the Bug and was to seize the western island, then the center of the fortress and the bridge leading to the northern island.

The I. / IR 135 reinforced with the 1. / Pi Btl 81 would occupy an assembling area by the river southeast of the railroad embankment in order to cross the Bug by either the bridge or in rubber boats, the battalion would conquer the northern island and then advance to the railroad tracks east of the North Island.

The 45 ID – Main effort.

It was discounted to find an enemy superior in number, so that the assault should have essentially the element of surprise, therefore the fire support would be short and intense, albeit with 600 mm mortars.

As always before an operation were carried out several religious services and the latest was on June 21, 1941 at 20:00 hours in the bivouac of the division HQ south of Wolka Dobrinska. That night the division took their readiness areas according to the plan and without interference from the enemy. The IR 135 established the regimental main aid station at the northern exit of Terespol in the action area of the III. Battalion. At 02:00 hours on June 22, 1941 still crossed the Bug the last train from the Soviet Union with raw materials according to the agreement in force since 1939.

The 2. / Schw. Art Abt 833.

The Karl Gerät (Device Karl - General d. Artillery in charge of the project) IV "Thor" together with the Karl Gerät III were part of the 2. Battery of Heavy Artillery Group 833 that was displaced in May 1941 to Terespol in the 4 AOK. The objectives that received the battery has been the citadel of Brest-Litovsk and the North Island.

Hello to all :D; more follows.....................

River crossing and attack a fortified area - Brest Litovsk in June 1941.

The 45 ID – Main effort.

Attack across the River Bug.

Fire support plan.

The fire of preparation could not be expected as a long-term, it should be short and intense to achieve surprise and facilitate the action of the assault groups, this fact was highlighted by the Commander of the division as a weakness. The 45 ID would have 9 light batteries (105 mm), 3 heavy (150 mm), 9 rocket batteries of the Nbl.Rgt.zbV4 and 2 mortars of 600 mm of the Schw Art Abt 833 which had a rate of fire of a shot every five minutes.

The concept of fire support match what was planned by the Commander and mostly concentrated the barrages on the citadel. The artillery regiment of the division with its own staff organized a group of heavy mortar (9 pieces) with the support of Höh.Artl.Kdr. 302, General-Lt. Heinemann. The Artl-Kdrs.27 achieved with the Commander of the XII AK that the artillery groups of the 31 ID and the 34 ID could support with their fires during the first five minutes of the attack.

Re: Siege of Brest Litovsk 1941

Post by tigre »

Hello to all :D; more follows.....................

River crossing and attack a fortified area - Brest Litovsk in June 1941.

The 45 ID – Main effort.

Attack across the River Bug.

Barbarossa. June 22, 1941.

At 03:00 hours only silence and darkness were present, the assault troops lay well masked in their areas of readiness. The minute hands of the wrist-watches jumping slowly and finally signalled the 03:15 hours when a hurricane of fire roared over the heads of the Germans soldiers when the Nebelwerfer-Regiment z. b. V. Nr 4 fired 2880 rockets in rapid succession, the heavy mortar IV "Thor" (600 mm) shot only three rounds as the fourth projectile never was fired and could not shoot anymore. However the artillery barrages shook the ground and clouds of black smoke rose from inside the fort; however soon came the disappointment as the strong walls of the fortress withstood the tremendous punishment.
