From what I have gathered (in my admittedly limited experience) WASt is an organization that will track down information regarding members of the former Wehrmacht. This is the website....

http://www.com-de.com/wast/frame_e.htm

From searching this website, it seems that they have helped many people find informatin on relatives who served Germany during WWII. I have a request in right now regarding my grandfather (see my post regerding Feldpost nr. 32498 C.) I have been told it can take up to months for a reply so be patient.

WASt would still be valid in your case.

Hallo Bernhard,

It depends on how long they are deceased. German privacy laws do not allow such information to be given to non-relatives untill somebody is dead for thirty years.

Hope this helps,
Timo

He is looking for information about his grandfather who served in this unit.

Hello Bernhard,

The WASt is in Berlin and you also have the Bundesarchiv, Abteilung Militärarchiv in Freiburg*.

Also for personal records;

- DRK (German Red Cross) Suchdienst München http://www.drk-suchdienst.org/
- International Tracing Service [urlhttp://www.its-arolsen.org[/url]
- Bundesarchiv Abteilung Bundesrepublik Deutschland in Koblenz http://www.barch.bund.de
- Bundesarchiv, Abteilung Militärarchiv in Freiburg* http://www.barch.bund.de
- Bundesarchiv - Außenstelle Aachen-Kornelimünster, Zentralnachweisstelle in Aachen http://www.barch.bund.de

Information for military hospital stays;

-Landesamt für Gesundheit und Soziales Versorgungsamt, Krankenbuchlager in Berlin http://www.berlin.de/sengessozv/lageso/index.html

POW in Russia,

- Staatliche Dienstelle Russisches Staatliches Kriegsarchiv ( RGWA )
125 212 Moskau, Admiral-Makarow-Str. 29
- Associacia „Vojennyje Memorialy“ 127 018, r Moskau, 52 Stadtbezirk
Straße der Sowjetarmee, Eingan 5, Block 6
- Suchreferat Moskau http://www.suchreferat-moskau.de/Unters ... index.html

And some more, but its a good start to begin with.

Volksbund.de indeed is a nice website but to bad it has many incorrect data.

Check this one out; http://www.soldatenfriedhof.de I now these guys myself, just this week I traced a German submarine veteran for them,
they are doing some impressive work over there.

Not thirty years, you must wait just ten if you aren't a relative.
taken from the WASt site:
"The basis for usage thereof is laid down in the law covering the "Processing of Personal Data by the Deutsche Dienststelle (WASt)" of 26.01.93 (GVBL. Nr.7 of 30.01.93, 49th year), which states that personal data, pertaining to a person still living, which is not for offical use, may not be disclosed to private individuals or organisations without prior consent of the person concerned. This does not apply to information about people who didn't survive the war. As a rule confidentiality is not impaired when a person has been dead for ten years or longer, or if the date of death remains unsolved, 90 years from the date of birth."
