Hello again Simon!

I agree that documentation/authorization of high awards such as the Knight's Cross so late in the war was not complete or official for many (deserving) soldiers... I just think that if a man like Allerberger actually was bestowed this award, it would have been possible after the war to find witnesses to the award event. For example, GFM Ferdinand Schörner didn't die until 1973.

A note of interest: Both top scoring Snipers, Matthias Hetzenauer (345 kills) and Sepp Allerberger (257 kills) belonged to the (austrian) 3. Gebirgs-Division from Styria. Another sniper, Helmut Wirnsberger (64 kills) also belonged to this Division before becaming a sniper instructor.

Forum member Bladerunner posted a interview with Hetzenauer earlier in this thread but there's also an interview with all three snipers. I know that this link have been posted before but here it goes again:

The interview also appears in Peter Senich's book "The German sniper 1914-1945"

If ever there was a book which ought to be translated into English then 'Im auge des Jägers' is the one. I can stumble through German but not well enough to be able to sit back and enjoy a whole book.

Hello Warager!

Nice sniper pics that you posted. I especially liked the one with the Sturmgewehr 44 with telescopic sight. Do you, or any other member have any information on how effective, or how popular the Sturmgewehr was as a sniper rifle?

German officer-sniper in the foothills of the Crimea leads fire according to the opponent from the captured self-loading rifle CBT-40. One can see well that the front belts of sword belt are fastened to the the waist.
