Tracking down an individual soldier

Hi,

A friend of mine has a ceremonial bayonette and belt of a soldier from the Leibstandarte Adolf Hitler and wants to know if it is possible to get hold of his service record. It wasn't taken from the remains of a soldier or from a battlefield, rather from a store room as the war ended and as such it's not even certain that the soldier in question was alive or dead.

Any ideas if this is possible or where to start?
