We have just received from head leader of the SS the sad news that our beloved kid, our brother we must remember, our beloved grand-children and neview
SS-Sturmmann
Bernhard Janning
Holder of the Medal for Assault of the Infanterie
has, April the 20th, one day before his 20th anniversary, given his short life on military duty, combatting for a new structure in Europe, as a follow-up to a strong wounding received April the 19th, while participating to heavy fights in the USSR.

Dear Berni, the separation is for us very heavy. Nethertheless, stay quite in the fresh and foreign soil in Peace.
In tiefem Schmerz:
Th. Janning und Frau Wilhelmine, geb. Kuhle
Hermann, z. Zt. im Osten, Rudolf, Willi, Hans, Maria, Inge und Erika als Geschwister.
Berge, Kr.Bersenbruck u. z. Zt. im Felde, den 27 April 1942

z. Zt im Osten means Zùr Zeit, actually, in the East
u. z. Zt im Felde means ùnd zùr Zeit, and actually in campaign

Thanks much, alsaco! No problem with your english translation. It provides more information for me to do further research. Do you, or anyone else know what Sturmann stands for? I am assuming this means infantryman or is it some kind of rank? Thanks again!

SS-Sturmmann

Hello John,

Sturmmann was a rank used within the Waffen-SS. If this man would be serving in the British army, he would be a lance corporal.
Please see the link below to learn more about the ranks used within the German Army (=Heer), Luftwaffe, Kriegsmarine and Waffen-SS.
