Hi there,
I've read the German version (Vergiß die Zeit der Dornen nicht) of this book. It's a pretty good book. Koschorrek was a member of 1./Panzergrenadier-Regiment 21 (24. Panzer-Division) and was one of the fortunate few who escaped encirclement at Stalingrad. He arrived in Stalingrad as a replacement in late October 1942. He saw limited action on the Stalingrad front-line, but his story is nevertheless very interesting. Particularly noteworthy is his description of his mission as an 'Essenhöler" (food fetcher) to the Krasny Oktyabr factory. This story goes for about 10 pages but it is gripping stuff.
Kosckorrek's unit moved west once the Russians attacked and thus avoided 'der Kessel' only by the skin of their teeth. They then fought in the bridgeheads around Chir.
It is an excellent first-hand account, and his descriptions of combat west of the Don in November and December 1942 are great. I will definitely be buying this English translation.
I recently received a catalogue from a German bookstore (the name escapes me at the moment, but it has a logo of a sailing ship and is based in München - anyone know?) and they are offering it for 19.95 EURO (they don't have it in stock at the moment), which is significantly cheaper than US dollars – to an Australian anyway!

I saw a copy of this book today at a militaria show. Toward the end of the war, the author was in a GD replacement company for the FBD apparently. He describes the GD in Spring 1945 as, "half-trained Hitler Youths, ex-Kreigsmarine and Luftwaffe personnel, and old men who were ethnic Germans from Eastern Europe who barely spoke German."
