British gun tubes

Post by Rodger Herbst »

Did the Brits, outside of the RN,have wire wrapped gun tubes?
Did the RN have wire wrapped outside the main batteries on BB's?
What i'v have been able too deduce the wire was square, not round, true?

Wire bound barrels were common for most Brit calibres until WW1. But 'built up barrels were also widely used. However, just before WW1 the French had developed autofrettage, which the Brits refined and for WW2 all army barrels less the smallest used this. Typically in a loose liner, monobloc construction was limited to about 3 inch calibre or smaller.
