First Me262 casualty

Post by Wurger »

Major Joseph Meyers of the 78th Fighter Group and his wingman, Lieutenant Manford Croy, Jr., were credited with the first Me 262 shot down on August 28, 1944. The pilot of the German jet, Oberfeldwebel H. "Ronny" Lauer of 1/KG(J) 51, was coming in to land at Chievres, Belgium when the P-47 pilots attacked. Lauer survived.

Thanks Wurger! I couldn't find the information, although I know I have it somewhere..... Hate it when that happens! Best Regards, David

First Me 262 casualty and some later-day replacements

Post by Wurger »

If I recall correctly a synopsis of the engagement can be found in "U.S. Army Air Force vs. the German Jet Fighters" (I think that's the title? I'm at work right now and can't check my bookshelves. Will double check that title.). No doubt it will also be found in Classic Publications four volume set on the Me 262.

Speaking of the 262, anyone with any interest in this bird should check out the progress on the *BRAND-NEW* and *AIRWORTHY* 262s at http://www.stormbirds.com - last I heard they were doing taxiing tests on the first one.

Book Title Correction

Post by Wurger »

The title of the book I was thinking of in my previous post is "German Jets Versus the U.S. Army Air Force" not "U.S. Army Air Force vs. the German Jet Fighters". Sorry for the confusion. It was late and I was tired.
