Hofi,
more on your quest for information about this particular battle --
The mountain called the "Golden Table" is close to the towns of Smolnik/Szomolnok and Oviz/Stará Voda. It is some kind of plateau that is almost impossible to reach in the winter because of the snow and was a partisan hideout during the war. Also, the book in German (Crack of Doom) was originally titled "In stolzer Trauer". You can still get it in used book stores in Germany for less than 5 Euros (paperback). It details the near-destruction of 101.Jg.Div. and Sturm-Rgt. Pz.AOK 1 between the towns of Slancik-Durkov-Rozhanovce and Kosice during a 24-hour period in late December 1944. Also in the book is a parallel story about the kidnapping of a German general by Slowak partisans and the efforts of a German rescue team to find him. It was written in the 1950s and is an excellent story. The fact that the author, Willi Heinrich, was in the 101.Jg.Div. and lived through this battle adds a great deal to the feel of this novel.
