Death of General Dollmann

Post by Helmut »

Servus,
I had always read that General Dollmann died of a heart attack on 29 June 44 . Recently I read, I don't remember where, that he actually committed suicide because of his having gotten on Hitler's bad side and that the heart attack was just a cover. Does anyone have any more info on this?

Thanks

The latter explination of his death is centred around simple rumour started by his COS, who, incidently, wasn't there in his HQ at the time.
A heart attack was the official, and also eye witness explination. Suicide happened but we know which generals did that (Kluge & Rommel) so why would Dollmann's be covered up.
In summery, it was a heart attack, while he may have fallen foul of Hitler, there is no evidence what so ever supporting the suicide case.

Thanks for clearing that up, Gareth.
It didn't make any sense to me either as to why, with many others having committed suicide, why specifically Dollmann's would be covered up.

Thanks again

For the FHQ, Dollmann was one of the main culprits for the Allied invasion, which happened in the sector of his Armee. He was especially blamed for the loss of Cherbourg because he ordered the withdrawal of forces from the Cotentin peninsula to prevent them from becoming bottled up in the fortress. Threatened with a Kriegsgericht, Dollmann justified his actions in a last telegram to the FHQ, bade a personal farewell to his staff and went to his chamber, where he took the posion that every german higher commander was carrying along. His Chef des Stabes, General Pemsel, was a highly respected officer both in the Wehrmacht and the Bundeswehr, and there is no reason to doubt his testimony. In fact, the suicides of Kluge, Rommel and Udet WERE covered up, as were many others committed by junior officers. Regrettably, incorrect causes of death are still listed in recent publications, a.e. in "Die Generale des Heeres" (another example would be Generalleutnant Willibald Borowietz who committed suicide in US captivity but is listed as "tödlich verunglückt".)

Stefan makes the mistake of citing that as fact and not a 'theory'. Like I said, it's Pemsel's statement based on a previous conversation with Dollmann ONLY that cites suicide. Pemsel wasn't in the HQ when he died. The only facts are that Dollmann died and it was sudden. Wiynesses seen him clitch his chest and fall into a ball, common for heart attack victims. The fact that Dollmann told Pemsel if the worst came to the worst he would committ suicide does not make his death automatically suicide. The official reason of death was heart attack, and as there is no evidence disproving that, unlike the case with many other deaths, we have to go with heart attack.
It's a mistake to base you historical research and fact on One mans statement who wasn't even there when others, including the medical examiner state otherwise.
There's a chance he did commit suicide, but it's just a chance, nothing more. There's also a chance that Hitler escaped Berlin and fled to Argentina but we're not going to believe that are we?

Hi Helmut!

The topic was already discussed several times and there has never been a satisfying result. But we won´t solve the mystery online.

Gareth is right. The task of a researcher is to state the fact. Fact is he died by heart attack (officially). Let´s accept at least this was the official version. I had to accept it myself.

I made a comment and wrote that his Chief of Staff (Gen. Lt. Max Pemsel) after the war said it was suicide.

As regards the DoD I took the 28.06.1944 (officially) and the 29.06.1944 (stated in Fellgiebel and Keilig).

Let´s store the information this way and you will rest easy again.

Well, if we go after the official records, Rommel died of the wounds suffered in the air attack, Udet died in an air crash and Heinz-Werner Eck never met the "Peleus". Let alone that no one ordered the "Endlösung".
If you say that I wasn't in Le Mans in 1944 and I didn't perform an autopsy on Dollmann, you're right. But just as you, I will continue to believe in what I think is the most logical explanation.
