WWI Luftwaffe uniform ID?

Hello,
This is a photo of my maternal grandfather (1897-1940) who was in the Lufftwaffe in WWI--rumor has it he flew with Goering, who later advised him to leave the country in the 1930's. My grandfather was also a physician; my mother is now deceased.

Thanks in advance for any ID on the uniform.

The badge being worn below the EK is the 'Bavarian Army Air Observers' badge.
