Hello to all :D; more.............................

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Reorganization and transfer to the eastern front.

In early January 1942, the 305th Infantry Division was relieved by the 708th Infantry Division and moved north to the south coast of Brittany, where it secured a stretch of coastline between Lorient and St Nazaire. By Order of February 7, 1942, the division was reorganized into a combat division. This meant an increase in effective strength from 9,550 to 15,700 men. For this purpose, the infantry regiments organized a company 13 (infantry howitzers) and 14 (anti-tank). The artillery regiment received a Group IV and was increased to a total of 12 batteries. The Pz Jg Abteilung received another anti-tank company with 5 cm anti-tank guns. On March 9, 1942 another Panzerjäger company was formed. With the reorganization Radfahr-Abteilung 305 was created with a Staff and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd Squadrons. Nachrichten-Kompanie 305 expanded to Infanterie-Divisions-Nachrichten-Abteilung 305.

On April 12, 1942, a new commander, Generalleutnant Kurt Oppenländer, took over. At the end of March 1942 it was replaced by the 333rd Infantry Division and moved to the rear as an army reserve. In early May 1942, the division began to be transferred to Russia (actually Ukraine). The provisional objective of the division was the area between Poltava and Kharkov. The division arrived at the front in the middle of the spring battle of Isjum - Kharkov and was deployed to the line immediately after its arrival, divided into battle groups. Individual battle groups attacked from Krasnograd and Novaya Vodolaga in the direction of the Berestovaya, crossed it and reached the Bereka on May 26.

IR 576 arrived at the front in the middle of the spring battle of Izyum - Kharkov and was deployed to the front immediately after arrival, divided into battle groups. AOK 6 sent it to the threatened Krasnograd. In addition to the regiment, there was a blockade group from the Pi Btl 260 here. On May 18, 1942, the regiment attacked northeast to join IR 578 attacking south from Novaya Vodolaga and to close the gap in the German Front by northeast of Krasnograd. The attack advanced slowly against stiff resistance. It was reinforced by Police Battalion 315. By the afternoon of May 21, the area 15 km northeast of Krasnograd had been reached. On May 22, the attack continued to the east, so that in the afternoon the regiment closed east of Starowerowka alongside IR 578 attacking to the southeast. Both regiments gained bridgeheads on the Berestovaya in a joint attack at night. Until May 26, the regiment pursued the retreating enemy southeast across the Kharkov-Losovaya railway line to the Bereka.

IR 578 arrived at the front in the middle of the spring battle of Izyum - Kharkov and was deployed to the front immediately after arrival, divided into battle groups. He landed in the Merefa area (about 20 km southwest of Kharkov) and was subordinated under the 113. Infantry Division. He then marched south to Novaya Vodolaga, where he replaced parts of the aforementioned Infantry Division. On May 18, the regiment attacked south to join forces with IR 576, which was attacking northeast from Krasnograd, and close the gap in the German front northeast of Krasnograd. On May 18 and 19 the regiment had to resist heavy Russian attacks south of Novaya Vodolaga. On May 22, IR 576 joined the Regiment. Both regiments gained bridgeheads on the Berestovaya in a joint attack at night. After crossing the Berestovya on May 22, the regiment pursued the retreating enemy southeast over the Kharkov-Losovaya railway line to the Bereka until May 26.

IR 577 landed in the Merefa area (about 20 km southwest of Kharkov) and was placed under the 113. Infantry Division. From May 18, the first parts of the regiment participated in the fight to close the gap in the front near Krasnograd. After crossing the Berestovaya on May 22, the regiment pursued the retreating enemy southeast over the Kharkov-Losovaya railway line to the Bereka on May 26. The ring around the encircled Russian units in Kharkov had become so tight that the regiment was pushed out of the front. He marched north towards Kharkov starting on May 29.

Then the 305. Infantry Division was withdrawn from the front and marched to Kharkov. On June 05, the 305. ID reached its new position, 15 km west of Volchansk.

Hello to all :D; more.............................

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Unternehmen “Wilhelm”

As the Battle of Kharkov drew to a close, the Army High Command decided to immediately use the success to attack the two remaining Russian groups still near Izyum and Volchansk. The 6th Army was tasked with this operation (code name "Wilhelm"). Three divisions of the VIII. Army Corps, 305. ID, 113. ID. and 336. ID. went into direct attack while the 389. ID was held in reserve.

On June 10, 1943, Operation "Wilhelm" began in preparation for the German summer offensive towards Stalingrad. The attacking divisions achieved quick successes in their offensive. The 305th Infantry Division advanced as the VIII's Army Corps right wing division to the Donets near Staritsa southwest of Volchansk and took the bridge intact. By the morning of June 13, the division had reached the Prikolotnoe station, 20 km east of Bjeluij Kolodes. On June 14, formations of the 22nd Panzer Division, coming from the south, reached the division and thus closed the pocket south of Volchansk. Between June 10 and 14, the IR 578 alone suffered the following casualties: 200 dead, 593 wounded, 26 missing, and 253 sick; no information on the other regiments.

After the end of Operation "Wilhelm", the division took over a section of positions north of the lower Neshegol, east of the Donets. On June 25, it moved into its final starting position for the German summer offensive off Krasnaya Polijana. The Russian army lost another 20,000 soldiers in the Battle of Volchansk.

Hello to all :D; more.............................

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Unternehmen “Blau”.

On June 30, 1942, the German offensive for the division began. It advanced towards the Oskol and reached the area west of Rossosh on July 8. On July 10 it continued its eastward advance and on July 12 reached the Don from the mouth of the Boguchar to Novo Kalitva, where the regiments took up positions in the sector. The division remained here until July 17. It then proceeded eastward from the Boguchar area and on July 22 reached the Chir near Bokovskaya and crossed the river the same day, proceeding further to the small bend of the Don. Here the division occupied a defensive sector in the sinew position of the Don bend, where it fended off strong counter-attacks.

On 30 June the German offensive for IR 576 began. It advanced northeast towards Oskol and on July 1 formed the right flank against the river to secure a divisional bridgehead on the east bank north of Nowy Oskol. This led to intense and costly defensive battles. At the start of the German offensive IR 577 and IR 578 advanced northeast towards Oskol and established a bridgehead on the east bank north of Nowy Oskol on July 1. On July 2, both regiments expanded the bridgehead. Then the advance continued across the Oskol. On July 6 and 7 they went first south-southeast, then east-southeast over the heights on the north bank of Chornaya Kalitva, Infantry Regiment 578 on the right, Infantry Regiment 576 on the left and Infantry Regiment 577 echeloned to the left, protecting the open flank, the advance was between 30 and 40 km on both days. The next day the bank of the Kalitwa was reached and a wide bridgehead to the south was gained. After a day's rest, the regiment continued east on July 10. It marched through the area that had already been traversed by 1st Panzer Army. On July 12, the 305th Infantry Division advanced into the Don sector it was to defend from the mouth of the Boguchar to Nowo Kalitva. The great loop Don of Verchnuij Mamon was left free. On July 13, IR 576 attacked the town of Galischevka with artillery support and took it after a long fight. While the IR 577 attacked the town of Grushevo with artillery support and took it after a brief fight.

On July 13 and 14, a defensive line was set up on the line that had been reached. On July 16 and 17, the regiments were relieved, and on July 17, the 305. Infantry Division moved east from the Boguchar area. The march passed Meshkov and Chirsky. On July 22 the Chir was reached. IR 576 crossed it at Bokovskaya on the same day, as did IR 577. After crossing the Chir, the march continued to the small bend of the Don, where a defensive position was taken. IR 578 crossed the Chir 20 km north of Bokovskaya on July 24, after continuing its advance, the regiment with III. /AR 305 was deployed as protection against the Russian bridgehead at Serafimowitsch on the Don, where it initially remained.

Hello to all :D; more.............................

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Kalatsch 1942.

In preparation for the 6th Army's attack on Kalach, on 27 July, IR 576 moved south to attack Russian forces west of Kalach. At first the regiment was subordinate to the 100. Jäger Division and later participated in the Battle of Kalach with the 389. Infantry Division. In this battle, it attacked first southeast towards Kalach, then sharply west, and finally south again to the northeast area of Surovikino. On July 30, IR 578 was assigned to the Italian "Celere" division, which had just arrived on the Don. Along with the Italians, the Russian bridgehead was eliminated. On August 04, the regiment was replaced on the Don by parts of the 79. ID and on August 06 and 07 it was again attached to its own division, which in the meantime had established a defensive sector of the small arc of the Don. The I./IR 578 (without the 2. Company) remained on the Don until 15 August.

As stated, the 305th Infantry Division moved into a defensive sector in the sinew position of the Don Bend, where it fended off heavy counter-attacks. These attacks peaked on August 6 and then slowly tapered off. Also on August 7 on the northeastern front of the 6th Army, the 305th ID and the 376th ID repulsed repeated Russian attacks with heavy losses for the enemy. On August 13, IR 576 rejoined 305. ID. During the attack on the Little Don Bend that followed on 13 August, the 305. ID was assigned to XIV Panzer Corps and had to cover the corps' left flank in the attack on the Don Bend below Sirotinskaya. On August 14 the entire division continued its advance towards the Don and already on August 16 the division reached the river near Sirotinskaya.

Starting on August 17, the division was relieved by the 60th Infantry Division (Mot), which in turn replaced the 3rd Infantry Division (Mot) on August 20 on the north-eastern front of the Don, south from Ilovlinskaya.

Crossing of the Don.

The division then marched further east, crossing the Don on September 5, and subsequently relieving the 384th Infantry Division in its positions from the Don to the southwest. Here the VIII. Army Corps with the 389. ID and the 305. ID. occupied defensive positions after crossing the river. His task was to secure the entire front of the land bridge. Each division had to secure around 10-12 km of frontage. Later, when some units withdrew and regrouped, the stretch to be held increased accordingly. From the history of the 305. ID. It shows that the replenishment service left a lot to be desired. There were shortages from ammunition to meat, fat and the like. The condition described would have lasted several weeks.

The combat troops were partly fed only soup without potatoes and only dry bread with nothing to spread. This in turn cost a lot of combat power due to the cold nights. Divisional casualties were made up poorly or not made up at all. Many battalions had up to 20% unrecovered casualties due to death/wounded/missing or disease. The divisions were repeatedly overflown in their trenches by squadrons of German Luftwaffe fighters, which inexorably found their way east. Black clouds lay across the eastern horizon.

During the first Kotluban offensive until September 12, 1942, the Red Army tried in vain to penetrate the strong defenses of the 305th Infantry Division and the 76th Infantry Division. On September 14, 1942, the combat strength of the infantry battalions of the 305. Infantry Division was estimated as follows: 3 strong (700 men and more), 2 medium (500-700), 4 average ( 400-500), an average sapper battalion (300-400). At the end of September the position of the 76. Infantry Division on the right was also taken, thus extending its own defensive position to 20 km.

Hello to all :D; more.............................

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Finally, on October 6, the division itself was relieved by the 76th Infantry Division and moved east to the northern part of Stalingrad, where it arrived on October 13. Heavy house-to-house fighting followed. On October 14, the German offensive against the tractor factory site began, which brought heavy casualties to the division. On October 15, 1942, the infantry regiments were renamed as grenadier regiments (albeit with no change in their combat power). At the time of the name change, the regiments were engaged in heavy fighting in the northern part of Stalingrad at the tractor factory premises. On October 16, fighting began for the "Barricades" artillery factory. The combat strength of the 305. Infantry Division fell in the period from October 12 to 19, 1942 to 9 weak infantry battalions (300-400 men) and a weak sapper battalion (200-300). In the course of the offensive on the "Red October" steel mill on October 23, 1942, IR 578, 576 and 577 with company or battalion level combat groups would continue towards their northernmost objectives taking the eastern part of the weapons factory and reaching the bank of the Volga in its sector. On October 26, 1942, the fighting strength of the 305. Infantry Division was given as five weak infantry battalions (300-400 men) and four completely exhausted and worn (less than 300), the Sapper Battalion 305 also worn (less than 200).

Extract about the "Dscherzhinsky" tractor factory.

On October 14, a carefully prepared operation begins, a major attack by several German divisions, including the 14th Panzer Division, the 305th and the 389th Infantry Division, on the Dscherschinksi tractor factory, at the eastern end of which is the command post of the 62nd Army (General Chuikov). Reinforcements were gathering from all sectors of the Sixth Army front, including from the Don flanks and the Kalmuck steppes. Five battalions of engineers, trained in the required type of bunker warfare, arrive from Germany in transport planes. All VIII. Fliegerkorps supported the attack, which was supposed to be the last to take Stalingrad.

On Thursday, October 15, thousands more bombs fell on Soviet positions and German Grenadiers attempted to break through to the 62nd Army command post. The German division stripes here are about 1,000 meters wide, and the fighting strength of the bleeding companies is only 10 to 30 men.

The commander of one of the units of the 305th Infantry Division, Major Emendörfer, reports that during the first three days of fighting in the industrial district, 6 of the 8 officers of his battalion were killed on the factory premises. Soviet losses are also serious. In two days of fighting, the troops there lost 75 percent of their strength. The attack is initially successful: on October 15, most of the industrial district with the tractor factory is conquered. And on Saturday, October 17, almost the entire Krasnaya Barrikady plant is in German hands.

Hello to all :D; more.............................

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

"Operation Hubertus"

For the subsequent "Operation Hubertus", the attempt to break the last Red Army resistance on the west bank of the Volga at Stalingrad and the associated removal of the last Soviet bridgeheads on the west bank of the river in November 1942, the division, reinforced with assault sapper battalions, was given the task of conquering the area from the “Barricades” factory to the banks of the Volga. In addition, the 305th Infantry Division received two sapper battalions, an assault gun detachment and a tank squadron from the 24th Panzer Division for the November 11, 1942 operation. On November 10, 1942, the entire weapons factory “Barricades” was cleared of enemies by German grenadiers, only in the section behind the factory and on the banks of the Volga there were still Russian fortifications. On November 11, 1942, the 305th Infantry Division advanced in its final assault on Stalingrad, with the assault sappers in the forefront. The division's attack was repulsed by Russian units, suffering heavy losses.

November 11, 1942: A new attack was ordered. The 305th Infantry Division to the north of the 100th Jäger Division attacked the part of "Red October" that had not yet been conquered. The 100. Jäger, along with its neighbor to the south, misled the enemy about the size and extent of the attack by the stormtroopers. IR 369, now only one battalion in strength, was added to the 305. ID. While the division's shock troops achieved several successes, the 305th Infantry Division and its neighbor to the left, the 389th Infantry Division, made little headway. On November 13, 1942 there was another attack, the Croats (IR 369) suffered heavy losses, but very little success with the capture of a large factory building and the taking of only 2 blocks of houses. The first snow fell on November 16, 1942. At night it was often below zero.

Hello to all :D; more.............................

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Reconstruction in France 1943.

According to an order dated February 17, 1943, the reorganization of the 305. Infantry Division in Brittany began on March 5, 1943. The Command of Military District V in Stuttgart was in charge of reconstruction and recruitment of new personnel. For this, the reinforced Grenadier Regiments 879 and 880 were incorporated into the division, the regimental commanders were Oberst Bede and Oberst Lange, respectively. There were also convalescents and soldiers on leave from the old division. The reorganization of the division took place in France in Brittany, starting in April in the Hesdin area between Amiens and Boulogne. Around 2,500 members of the "old division" made up the cadre of the individual divisional units when it was reorganized.

The Grenadier Regiment 879 (reinforced) was created by order of the Chief of Army Armaments and Commander of the Replacement Army AHA Ia(I) No. 630/43 g.Kdos, from February 6 to March 12, 1943 by the Command of the Military District V using the Course for Sub-Leaders (Unterführer-Lehrgangs) of the military district and the students of the second and third courses in the Münsingen military training area. The reason for the formation was the planned reestablishment of the 6th Army divisions that had been destroyed at Stalingrad. The regiment was divided into:
Regimental staff
3 grenadier battalions
Panzerjaeger Company
Infantry Weapons Company
Artillery group
Sappers Company
Ciclist squadron
On April 1, 1943, the regiment was reorganized as the Grenadier Regiment 576.

Already on April 1, 1943, the Grenadier Regiment 576 was organized again from the Grenadier Regiment 879 (reinforced) in Brittany in accordance with the decree of February 17, 1943. On May 9, 1943, the III . Battalion was handed over to Grenadier Regiment 754 and later not re-established.

Already on April 1, 1943, the Grenadier Regiment 577 was organized again in Brittany according to the decree of February 17, 1943 from the remains of the destroyed 305. Infantry Division.

The Grenadier Regiment 880 (reinforced) was created by the Chief of Army Armaments and Commander of the Replacement Army AHA Ia(I) No. 630/43 g.Kdos, from February 06 to March 12, 1943 by the Command of the Military District VI using the Sub-Leaders Course (Unterführer-Lehrgangs) of the military district and the students of the 2nd and 3rd courses in the Wahn military training area. The reason for the formation was the planned reestablishment of the 6th Army divisions that had been destroyed at Stalingrad. The regiment was divided into:
Regimental staff
3 grenadier battalions
Panzerjaeger Company
Infantry Weapons Company
Artillery group
Sappers Company
Ciclist squadron
On April 1, 1943, the regiment was incorporated into the newly established 305th Infantry Division.

Already on April 1, 1943, the Grenadier Regiment 578 was reorganized from the Grenadier Regiment 880 (reinforced) in Brittany in accordance with the decree of February 17, 1943.

The Artillery Regiment 305 was re-established on April 1, 1943 in France. The new regiment was formed from the artillery groups (abteilungen) of the reinforced Grenadier Regiments 879 and 880. The new regiment was also subordinate to the 305. Infantry Division.

The re-establishment of the Pi Btl 305 began on April 1, 1943 from the sapper companies of the reinforced 879 and 880 Grenadier Regiments.

The Panzerjäger-Abteilung 305 was reestablished in France in the summer of 1943 with three companies.

The Aufkl. Abt. 305 was formed in France in April 1943 with four companies from the 879 and 880 cyclist squadrons. On July 26, 1943, the battalion was renamed the Rifle Battalion 305.

The Nachrichten-Abt. 305 was re-established on April 1, 1943 in France.

Hello to all :D; more.............................

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Transfer to the south of France and Italy 1943.

On June 1, 1943, Oberst Hauck was promoted to Generalmajor and, at the same time, appointed Division Commanding Officer - Divisionskommandeur (before that he was Divisionsführer). Also on that day, the division issued a status report, mentioning a shortage of only 7 officers and 169 NCOs.
On June 3, 1943, the division was ordered to dispose of the following units for the new establishment of the 334. ID: III./GR 576 (in full), 9./AR 305 and Staff III. Abteilung and Stabsbatterie (HQ Battery) as unit personnel. The first transports left on June 7.

On July 24, 1943, the division was ordered by the LXXXII Armeekorps to move to the area of the Oberbefehlshaber Süd. The division was reinforced by the schwere Artillerie Abteilung 451 (*).
On July 26, 1943, the division issued its Vorbefehl for division transport. II./GR 577, currently deployed as Wachbataillon at AOK15 HQ in Tourcoing, was to be relieved by II./GR 146. In addition, 5./GR 578, currently deployed in Doullens, was to be relieved by a company of the SS-Panzergrenadierdivision Hohenstaufen.
On July 27, 1943 the division sent an interesting message to the LXXXII Armeekorps. Commanders of some division units had heard French civilians discuss the division's movement (including destination) as early as 26 July, even before the division itself had been informed.

Starting on July 27, the 305. Infantry Division moved by rail to the Côte d'Azur (Nice and Menton), where it was assigned to the Italian 4th Army. During the transfer there was a train accident (resistance sabotage?) when was being transported the II. Battalion of GR 577. 22 non-commissioned officers and soldiers died, 5 officers and 59 non-commissioned officers and soldiers were injured.
On August 12, 1944, the division continued its march and moved to La Spezia area, where the last transport arrived on August 30.

(*) Organized on February 22, 1943 in France by changing the name of the Artillerie-Abteilung Simon at Heerestruppe level.

Hello to all :D; more.............................

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Italy 1943.

On September 8, 1943, Italy surrendered unconditionally to the Allies - Italy had an armistice. In the night of September 8/9, 1943, the "Axis Case" ("Fall Achse") began. After Italy's unconditional surrender, the division disarmed the Italian units in the La Spezia area.

The reinforced Grenadier Regiment 576, which had crossed La Spezia in the night, with the III. / Infantry Regiment 577 and the I. / Artillery Regiment 305, disarmed the Italian troops in La Spezia and then occupied the city and port.

The reinforced Grenadier Regiment 577 with the I. / Grenadier Regiment 578, without its III. Battalion (at GR 576) and with the bulk of the artillery disarmed the Italian formations between Sestri Levante and Spezia.

The reinforced Grenadier Regiment 578 (without I. Battalion) disarmed the Italian units in the area from Rapallo to Sestri Levante and also took over an Italian POW camp with British prisoners.

The disarmament action ended on September 9th. From August 12, the division took over coastal security from the mouth of the Magra to Viareggio, including the port of Livorno. On September 14, the 24th Panzer Division took over the protection of the port of Livorno.

From October 2, 1943, the division was replaced by the 90th Panzergrenadier Division and transferred to OB Süd from October 4. The division was reorganized into a division of a new type and gave the III. Battalions of the grenadier regiments, the III. / Artillery Regiment 305, the 3rd (Fla) / Panzerjäger Battalion 305 and the personnel of three platoons each of an infantry gun company (Infanteriegeschütz) and an infantry tank destroyer company (Infanteriepanzerjägerkompanie). Hello to all :D; more.............................

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Italy late 1943.

The 305.ID was both north and south of the foothills of the Abruzzo in the Liri Valley. By early November, the Grenadier Regiment 577 had taken up defensive positions on Monte Pantano. The Grenadier Regiment 578 blocked the Cerasuolo Vecchio pass with the II. Battalion. The I. Battalion joined the Grenadier Regiment 576 in the Sangro Valley in a 10 km long security line through the high mountains. In November 1943 there was heavy defensive fighting and the first American and British attacks on the division's front line began. During the defense of Monte Pantano from November 29 to December 16, 1943, the Grenadier Regiment 577 had lost 10 officers, 59 NCOs and 373 soldiers.

In mid-December 1943, the division with its southern wing moved to the northeast. The new front line now joined the 44th Infantry Division at the northeast end of the long Monte Monna Casale and ran north over the Colle delle Rose to Catenella delle Mainarde.

Between December 20 and 22, 1943, the southern part of the division (Grenadier Regiments 577 and 578) was replaced by the 5. Mountain Division, which in turn replaced parts of the 1. Parachute Division. The new line of defense now ran between the Abruzzo and Mauella in the center of the Italian front. The division formed here, as "Korpsgruppe Hauck" directly subordinate to Army Command (AOK) 10, the link between the XIV. Panzer Corps in the south and the LXXVI. Panzer Corps in the north.

Their positions were supported by the mountains on both sides, which were difficult to access. He blocked the roads leading north between the mountains, the Sangro Valley route with the Grenadier Regiment 576 and the Castel di Sangro road over the Roccaraso pass to Sulmona with the Grenadier Regiment 577, which connected with the Grenadier Regiment 676 to the north. Grenadier Regiment 578 held the rest of the former 1. Parachute Division positions up to the Ateleta level (over the Sangro) with their weakened II. Battalion, since the I. Battalion was with the Grenadier Regiment 576.
