Development of the rocket in the German Army.
In March of 1931, the German scientist Karl Poggensee reached the 450 meters of height using a solid-propellant rocket. In the same month, the technician Johannes Winkler experienced with a liquid-propellant rocket HWR 1 (Hückler-Winkler-Raketen 1) being Hückel the name of the man who financed the project. In that same year the pioneer of the German missile technology, Willy Ley reached the 1600 meters with a liquid-propellant rocket.
The German Army began to experience with rockets, being settled down the department of Wa-Prüf 11 in the artillery ground tests of Kummersdorf - West (Artillerie-Versuchsgelände). Within the Wa-Prüf were established two areas: one for solid-propellant rockets (feststoffraketen) and another one for liquid-propellant rockets (flüssigkeitsraketen). Under command of Hauptmann Dr Walter Dornberger the Germans gathered around 250 young scientific.
The first rocket, the direct predecessor of the famous V-2, was the A-1 (Aggregat 1) with an impulse of 300 kilopond (kilogram-force) that used liquid fuel. This was followed by the A-2 whose two first prototypes were called “Max” and “Moritz” those were launched in December of 1934 from the island of Borkum reaching a height of 2000 meters.

In 1937 Wa-Prüf 11 left the ground tests of artillery (Artillerie-Versuchsgelände) of Kümmersdorf-West and it settled down in the Testing area of the Army (Heeres-Verssuchsanstalt) of Peenemünde.
In September of that year began the works on the A-3 a liquid-propellant rocket which had a 1300 impulse kilopond, measured 6.4 meters in length and weighed 748 kilograms.

Nevertheless its system of guidance was very rudimentary, reason why it did not have successful flights. With the course of the war a rocket with a payload of one ton of explosives and a range of about 250 kilometers was required; it was looked for a weapon which could reach at London or Paris, which in turn would be the A-4 (or V-2).

The rocket A-5.
In order to correct the control problems of the A-4, a smaller variant was constructed. It was the A-5, which flew successfully at the end of 1938 reaching a height of 10,000 meters.
The rocket A-4.
On June 13 of 1942 it was built the first A-4, which measured 14.03 meters and weighed 1,225 kilograms.

The rocket A-4.
After several tests and attempts which ended in failures, on August 16 of 1942, one A-4 flew with certain success and on October 03 of 1942, another one flew parallel to the coast of Pomerania about 192 kilometers having reached a height of 80 kilometers.
The weight of take-off was of 12.9 tons, being 70% of fuel (3,965 kilograms) and comburant (4,970 kilograms). The mixture's burning took place in the combustion chamber to about 125 Kg./s with a speed of spilling of 2139 meters/s.

The rocket A-4.
By comparison the V-1 which was a project of the Luftwaffe and was born from the tube of Schmidt was a pulse reactor (it carries the fuel and it takes the comburant from surrounding). It flew to about 650 K/h reaching a height between 300 and 2000 meters and had a weight of takeoff of about 2,200 kilograms of them 800 kg of payload (battle head). It cost between 1500 and 10,000 Reichsmarks and needed 280 working hours.
The V-2 (A-4) in turn had a cost of 75,000 Reichsmarks and needed 13,000 working hours.
