Ok...I'm led to believe its a motorcycle company detachment from the 16th Panzer Division who fought in southern Russia during 1941 :D

Hello pal :D; you've right it belongs to the 16 Pz which fought within Pz Group Kleist (white K) through Ukraine during 1941. Here goes another pictures of that insignia. Cheers. Raúl M 8).

Does anyone know what the "JG" in the circle in the first picture means? and which colours were used for it? (black on yellow maybe?)
I don't recall ever having seen that before.

Thanks in advance,

Paul

The JG is probably "IG" (India - Golf). The Germans often used the capital letter "J" (Juliet) instead of the capital letter "I", which in turn was used as the number "1". This was to avoid confusion with the numer "1", as many typewriters of that age did not have this particular number as a key. See vintage German typewriter. Anyway, I can only speculate that JG means Infanteriegeschütz (infantry gun), so possibly it was a motorcycle in an infantry gun unit.

Wandering further into the field of speculation, the circle with the "IG" appears to be the same shade as the 16. Panzer-Division insignia, which was yellow. The letters are probably black, or possibly the same color as the motorcycle, i.e. dark (Panzer) grey. The K for Kleist was white.

My 2 Eurocents

Hi Leo,

I didn't know about the use of capital I's and j's so I learned something new today. Your Infanterie Geschütz speculation is something I hadn't thought of but sounds logical and is all I can come up with too after thinking it over for a bit. It could add some legitimacy to the speculation if there are other examples of lettercombinations used in that way. Personally I can't think of any but maybe you (or anyone else of course) do know some?
Agree with the colouranalysis, you arrive at the same conclusion by the same method as I did. It must be that then :D .

Thank you!

Frankly, I have never seen the "JG" used to denote an infantry gun unit or subunit, (which would use the standarized symbol) so I agree that it probably does NOT mean an infantry gun unit.
