148. Grenzschutz Regiment in 1939.

Post by L.Gladysiak »

Hello everyone,

I am looking for any information connected with 148. Grenzschutz Regiment in 1939.
Until now I lay down that concerned unit was attached to the command of 13th Border Group ant it was led by gen. Schenckendorff. The regiment moved probably from the Frankfurt/Oder region to Poznan (Posen) where the first sub-unit, consisted of 14 soldiers under cavalry-captain Count Ratibor, reached the city at about 10 am on Sunday 10. September.
There were probbably two improvised armoured cars attached to concerned unit - there were several photos of them in polish archives, but I am not certain whether the vehicles belonged exactly to 14. GrSch-Reg.

If anybody knows anything more about this unit or has any photos or other records connected I will be very glad to get to know them :-).

Best Regards!

Greetings L.Gladysiak !! :D

The only mention I can find for 148. Grenzschutz Regiment is on 01 Sept. 1939, when it was stationed on the Western Front. Unfortunately I can find no mention of it after this point.

EIGHTH ARMY: [AOK 8]:
AOK Reserves:
I./Flak-Regt.-33 (gem.)
I./Flak-Regt.-52 (gem.)
PzJag.Abt.-561
30 Inf.Div.
Grenzschutzabschnitts-Kdo.-13: **
Grenzschutz-Regt.-108
Grenzschutz-Regt.-118
Grenzschutz-Regt.-138 (Verteidigungzone)
Grenzschutz-Regt.-148 (Verteidigungzone)
Grenzschutzabschnitts-Kdo.-14:
Grenzschutz-Regt.-88
Grenzschutz-Regt.-98
Grenzschutz-Regt.-128 (Verteidigungzone)

(** Gen.d.Inf. z.V. Max von Schenckendorf
01 Sept. 1939 to 25 Oct. 1939:
Kommandeur of Grenzschutzkommando 13.)

Good luck in your hunting !!

Best regards,

Thanks for answer Shadow.

By the way, it's quite intresting that on 1. September the unit was attached to AOK 8 on the West and in ten-day period it has appeared in Poland...

By 10 Sept. 1939, because of the surprising (even to the Germans) speed of the "Blitzkrieg", less effective combat units were already being moved, from west to east, into Poland, to replace battle hardened combat divisions which were then quickly dispatched to the Western Front in anticipation of some kind of advance into German territory by the French/British forces.

Also note that Gen.d.Inf. z.V. Max von Schenckendorf, commanded 10 Grenzschutzabschnitts-Kdo.-13 (of which 148 Grenz-Rgt was a part) until 25 Oct. 1939.

On that date (one day before it was officially made part of the German Reich) he was made Kommandant of Posen/Poznan, as noted by my friend Doktor Krollspell in his post to you.

Might this be an indication that his original command, possibly along with 148 Grenz-Rgt, was enroute to the east, along with him, at the time of his appointment to command Posen/Poznan?

FWIW: Just a thought on my part.
