Kriegsmarine Marinebordflakabteilung

Post by addenbrool »

I have been researching my fathers war service.
Below is the companies he served in. We got this info from the WASt.
Does anyone know if these were Kriegsmarine ground units or ship based?
or any photos or info on these companies.

17. Schiffsstammabteilung, Memel.
2. Kompanie Marinebordflakabteilung Sud, Neapel.
2. Kompanie 22. Marinebordflakabteilung, Trest-Geignano

Any help anyone can give, will be greatly appreciated.

regards

Hi izi,

The name of the unit -Bordflakabteilung- suggests that it served aboard a ship but logic didn't always get in the way when naming units.

In 1943 it may have been subordinated to Seetransportchef Italien, not sure of this but I have found 'Bordflak units with Seetransportchef Italy' in a text. Seetransportchef Italien was formed in 1941 and disbanded in late 1943 or early 1944.
22 BordflakAbt. definitely served with the 'Seetransportchef Adria' during 1944 (formed in January 1944). Other units in this command were 6 Transportflotille and 10 Landungsflotille.
To me that suggests the possibilty of the unit being aboard ships (captured trawlers and whalers most likely, somewhat like the Vorpostenflotillen that served on the Atlantic, North and Baltic seas) to defend the transport and landing ships of the Transport Commands from airraids.

Not much, but I hope it helps you along a bit.

Best regards,

Paul

I believe there are brief unit histories for all those units posted on the main site as well!

Hello all,
Not been on for a while but think I may have finally got somewhere.
Through everyones help it has come to light that I have relations in Germany who knew my father, the WASt have supplied more information and have recieved a roll of microfilm from NARA that covers the specific unit and dates that my father served. So I have booked an afternoon at the library to sit and scour said microfilm and hopefully get the answers I have longed for.
Will keep updating as and when.
Many thanks for all help given.
