Breton autonomy

Post by John Kilmartin »

Hi guys,
Does anyone know of any references to the Germans leading the Bretons to believe that they would be given their own enclave like the Croats or the Slovaks?
Thanks in advance.

It was briefly discussed in 1941 and 1942 before Hitler dropped the whole pretence of "alliance" and "cooperation" with the French. I am away from home so cannot consult my bookshelves but the Breton separatists had discussions with Berlin in a similar vein to those between Berlin and some IRA officers. In the end, it would never have come to anything.

After the war, some Breton nationalists (most prominent is Alan Heussaf) were given asylum in Ireland. Heussaf was involved in pan-celticism associations during his exile in Ireland

There is a small unit under the SD that was named 'Bretonische Waffen-verbaende der SS" (Bezzen Perrot)
