Narwa-Front, 02.-04.1944 Gren.Reg. 366

Post by Leibhusar »

Hello,
I hope that someone can help me.

I´m a little bit confused about the following different places of the 366. Grenadierregiment, 227. Infanteriedivision:

Otto Carius, “Tigers in the mud”:
Carius located the Wenglergrenadiere (= 366. Grenadierregiment, 227. Infanteriedivision) in mid February 1944 in the surrounding of Riigi ca. 7 km in the north of Narva.

Tietke, “Tragedy of the Faith”:
14.02.1944 Gefechtsstand Gen. Berlin, Kdr. 227. Infanteriedivision in the surounding of Mereküla ca. 8 km in the northesast of Narva on the Baltic shore.

“Im Raum Narva 1944 …1994”
Located the 227. ID to be part of the troops who attacked the “Westsack” on the 26. – 31. March 1944 from the western side.

On 06. April 1944, 366. Grenadierregiment took action in the Ostsack affair.

According to an Estonian map, in February 1944 the 227. ID stood app. 10 km in the west of Krivasoo. ( ca. 40-50 km from the place Carius mentioned!)

Can anybody tell me the locations/places of the 366 Grenadierregiment and 227. Infanteriedivision from February – April 1944?

Does anybod know the exact location of the river (town???) Ormuti?

Many thanks for your help!!!

Here is a map Feb.1944. (in estonian)
http://www.wehrmacht.pri.ee/lahingukaar ... narwa2.JPG
Omuti - this is a small village, south from Kuningaküla. On the map, location of Omuti is in the centre of red circle.

Hello, and many thanks for the maps and for lcating Omuti!

The older Map was known to me and ist the part of the Problem!

This Map shows the 227. Infanterydivision in february 1944 in the surrounding of Omuti.

But:

1. I have a Newspaper from 06. February 1944 where The "Wenglergrenadiere"= Gren. Reg. 366, 227. ID where fighting in the close surrounding of the beaches of Narva-Hungerburg (Narva Joesuu)

2. The Division Staff of the 227. ID, located in Mereküla was in danger during the sowjet naval Operation on the beaches of Mereküla on 14. February 1944

3. Otto Carius "Tiger in the Mud" located the Wenglergrenadiere in the surrounding of Riigi (Half the way between narva and the Baltic See, where he met Wengler himself!) up from the 16 th February 1944 to ca. 17. March 1944
(On the map you can see the 225. ID in Riigi...)

4. The Westsack Affair took place in End of March 1944

5. Eastsack: 6.th of April
(East and Westsack Affairs: Both with the 366. GrenReg.!)

6. The retreat from Leningrad stopped at the Narwa ca. on the 1st February 1944. The Regiment took immediately place in the trenches at Narva River between Narva and the coast (Another newspaper from February 1944).

So there ist not so mucht time that the 227. ID could stay at the Omuti.
Or did they splitted the Division (I don´t think so look No. 2)?
Or the Division was send only for some days to the Omuti site? But I even cant believe that!

So maybe the Map Title must be changed from February 1944 to May June 1944??????? I dont know..... But I think February ist probably wrong...

On the other Hand it is said that the Wenglergrenadiere shot many T34 on the Omuti Site of the Narva River (But I have no date for that )... Little bit confusing.....
What do you think????

Yes, There is a mistake in the Map,

So the 2 Divisions, the 225. and the 227., were exchanged!
The 225. Div. stood north of Lake Peipsi and the 227. north of Narva!

Jan.1944, by retreat to Narwa, from retreating units LIV Armecorps was formed. General of infantry Otto Sponheim had not much left do collect into this Armecorps. Maybe in the better condition were 227. ID and leftover from 225.ID was also given under the command of 227. ID.
170. ID was in some way or other functional after strengthening with leftovers from 10. Luftwaffe-felddivision.
31. Jan. 1944 in commandment “Panther-Befahl Nr.1” to the defense of Narwa line, from the north coast of Lake Peipus to the north end of Krivasoo Swamps was situated LIV Armecorps and farter north to the sea III SS Armored corps. Responsibility of 227. ID was north half of LIV Armecorps lines.
This was a situation in the very end of January 1944. (23.Febr.1944 by large reforms in this sector, Armegroup “Narwa” was formed.)
But at the same time there is a given fact – at the night of 3.Febr.1944 subunits of Russian 48. Detached Rifle brigade of Navy attack across the Narva River by Narva-Jõesuu and made a bridgehead between kampfgruppe “Wengler” (336.reg.) and kampfgruppe “Kausch” (from “Hermann von Salza”). This small bridgehead was destroyed soon, by force of “Nordland” Division. Russians left to the west side of river 200 dead and 40 POW. (KTB Narwa Nr.1/II)
13.02.44 estonian units from 45.- and 46. SS reg. replaces 227.ID from the Riigi bridgehead line. At this time the bridgehead was grown up and has strong soviet defense units – 378. rifle division, 340. detached MG reg. and 803. flakreg. 227.ID had made continual attacks to this bridgehead, but no success.
24.02.44 (Estonian independents day) Estonian units wiped out Riigi bridgehead from Estonian side of the river.

But I think the 20 Estonian SS replaced the 227 ID later - on the 20. February 44. Hptm. Speckblanke, Kp Leader GR 366 felt at Riigi on the 16.February 1944...
