Looking for Grandfather's Place of Death

Post by Guiscard »

My grandfather was in the Heer, assigned to Panzergrenadier-Lehr-Regiment 902.

When he was killed his friend picked up diary. His friend would later be sent to Siberia on the war's end, and most of the diary was torn off. (Guessing he must have used it for a fire) From the diary I have discovered he fought on the frontlines in Normandy with the 902.

Although 1/2 of it survives, the later half does not. My grandfather was reported killed on the date, September 16th, 1944.

I've been looking around for where he was killed, it might even led to where we could find his grave (although I doubt if he was even buried). However, I myself have been looking for where the 902nd fought on that date and I have not come to a successful conclusion. If anyone has any sources or could possibly find out I would be deeply indebted.

Helmut Ritgens History of the Panzerlehrdivison would help for sure , but I don't have it at hand at the moment ...

Or you contact the veterans organisation of PzGrenLhrRgt. 902 :

Panzergrenadier-Lehr-Regiment 902

Hans-O. Neumann

Is that the Regiment's Veterans Organization? Because if so, hopefully that may know of all people.

Can you please confirm your grandfather's name and date of birth?

Cheers,

From the church records we (my family) recieved from his old church in Swabia.

Name: Georg (My name is also Georg with an e) Hans Sterner

Date of Birth: 1919, June 21st

I have his rank which he held until late 1943 which was Unteroffizier, and I am guessing that he may have held the rank of Feldwebel by Sept. 1944.

I don't know which company he was specifically assigned to...

I'll try to find his decorations if that would help

George,
I checked the Volksbund website but could not find a match in respect to your grandfather. Did you already contact WASt?

WASt (Wehrmachtsauskunftstelle) is an organization which centralizes information of Wehrmacht soldiers (KIA and MIA).
Here is a link for your information:

Ok thank you, is there anyway to find where he was killed without the records in the volksbund?

It might be possible to identify the area or even location with the WASt records and additional research, however this is something that will require patience and work.

Cheers,

Hi Guiscard
Do you speak German? Then use http://www.vermisst-gefallen.net/forum
There you get information about the possibilitys you have to ask (WASt: http://www.dd-wast.de; VDK: http://www.volksbund.de and others)
Bye
