Lee-Enfield mk.4 no.1 rifle

Post by Tony »

The Lee-Enfield had a removable 10-round magazine, but I've read that it could be reloaded without taking the magazine out from 2 5-round stripper clips. Which was used more often in combat?

You almost always would feed in clips from the open bolt - not by replacing the magazine. It only takes a couple of seconds and, anyway, you wouldn't have been issued spare magazines - just clips.

Noone was issued with spare magazines, tho im sure it would have been normal practice to scrounge a spare or too and keep them primed in a pouch somewhere. Loading by clip - in this case two five-round stripper clips - was relatively quick and painless - but as we all know in the heat there are times you really dont wan to be fiddling around.....

Just been chatting to a guy in the US who owns a couple of SMLE's and still shoots them competitively. The magazines aren't exactly an easy fit, even now 50+ years on! the release is the little lever in the trigger guard in front of the trigger, and as theyre not designed for regular removal - only cleaning - are a very stiff fit. So unless youre VERY good its a two-handed job. And as slow as loading from primed clips.
