Thank you, Jason and John. I'm very honored and flattered at your comments. You've both played important roles in whatever growth I've undergone in my research, and I'm very grateful.

The list of others I'd like to acknowledge is very long, and I'll get around to a detailed listing here... one of these days. In the meantime, here's a partial list of those who've done the most to advance my knowledge and provide encouragement, research materials, and friendship (not just listing them to drop names- these gentlemen [and one lady] have gone to great lengths to help me, and I'm just lucky to have benefited from their benevolence):

*** My Wife *** (thanks to another member's PM for reminding me that she goes at the TOP, not toward the bottom, of the list)
Ken McCanliss
Mark C. Yerger
Roger J. Bender
Andreas Schulz
Phil Nix
Martin Mansson
Peter Hertel
Mark Costa
Hugo Morsink
Piotr Szarafinski
Hugh Page Taylor

But I haven't always listened to them. When told by one of those listed that I should focus on one series and finish it before starting another one, I tried that. But I'm an unfocused scatterbrain, probably an easy diagnosee for attention deficit hyperactive disorder, and just couldn't do it. Had to start a set of books (at least two, possibly three volumes) on the Gauleiter and stellvertretender Gauleiter der NSDAP, then another on the leaders of the SA, NSKK, and NSFK. Probable result: I won't finish any of them. But I'm hopefully nearing completion on the Gauleiter project- at least it feels like I am, and will then resume with Volume II of "Leaders of the SS & German Police".

Best wishes,
~ Mike

Mike - How about giving us some detailed background information about when you began your research and where it has taken you along with the sources that you have found most helpful? What you your primary interest when you first began to study the German military?

I've had the good fortune of seeing Mike's Gauleiters work. To call it comprehensive would be a massive understatement. It, and he, helped me tremendously on my Poland book and I hope to be able to repay him with my work on Breslau and Karl Hanke.

I'm reviewing Mike's Gauleiter work as well and it's both massive and impressive. Mike is doing some fantastic work and I look forward to him sharing some background regarding his research.

Thanks, gentlemen, for the extremely kind comments. In the next day or two, I'll work on posting some facts and anecdotes regarding the development of this-- hobby, bizarre obsession, whatever you want to call it.

Thanks again.

Sincerely,
~ Mike

Erik~

Apologies for the long delay in this reply, as well as the fact that I don't have any information on the person you referenced. It's a crap shoot in most cases, at least for the lower-ranking, more obscure fellows (unless they held commissioned rank, high awards, or documented involvement in/indictment for war crimes/crimes against humanity).

Sorry again that I couldn't be of help.

Best wishes,
~ Mike

Has Mike changed his e-mail address recently?

I've sent a few things over the past few months on Karl Hanke but I'm not entirely sure they reached him. :(

Hi, Richard.

John Moore alerted me to your post, and sure enough- the e-mail address to which you kindly sent the Hanke items is temporarily defunct, dead in the water, kaputt, finito, dead as Dillinger.

I may always be reached via the following: [email protected]

Sincerely, und mit brennender Sorge ( :D ),

And I should follow that up with a general purpose apology for all whom I've given the distinct appearance of slighting through my slothful ways in the correspondence department. It's no excuse, but I am always inundated with e-mails- mostly with polite requests for information on all manner of personalities of the Wehrmacht, Waffen-SS, NSDAP, usw. I have fallen behind on replying to these, and it's not ONLY because I'm a jerk (that's just part of the reason); fact is, I'm as lazy as I am busy, and I've bitten off far more than I can possibly chew in my projects toward publication (hence the fact no one out there has seen or smelled a Volume II to my "Leaders of the SS & German Police" series).

I'll make a real effort to be more conscientious and just plain decent, and I appreciate those who've stood by me despite my deficiencies in that regard.

Sincerely,
~ Mike

I understand how Mike feels. I'm sure that he would like nothing more than to respond to everyone's request for information. I think it's something that we all go through and then it strikes us that we are slowly becoming slaves to the research community and that we have to make some adjustments.

Hi Mike,

No problem whatsoever. You should have a couple of e-mails nestling in your Axis inbox now!

I get quite a few requests for help too - and try to help where I can but what with a fairly demanding day job and a hobby that has a ravenous appetite for time and money, I don't always succeed. :(

Right, back to more Breslau translating...

03.09.1939 – 20.11.1939 Führer of the “Volksdeutschen Selbstschutzes” (Ethnic German Self-Defense units) in Danzig-Westpreussen. On one occasion, during a visit by the Reichsführer-SS, von Alvensleben personally supervised the execution of 20 alleged Polish saboteurs near Bromberg; he personally finished off a wounded victim with his pistol. One of his relatives, Graf von Alvensleben-Schoneborn, married a Pole and was friendly with Polish nationalists and Jews, allowing his son to be tutored by a Jew. Von Alvensleben, a fervent believer that Germans who had “betrayed their race” should be eliminated, shot this relative and reported the episode to Karl Wolff on 12.12.1939. The following is excerpted from Heinz Höhne’s The Order of the Death’s Head:

“[Von Alvensleben] was a fanatical National-Socialist and in his area he instituted a regime of tyranny reminiscent of that to which the democrats and republicans had been subjected by the SA thugs of the [SA-Gruppenführer] Karl Ernst school with their ‘wildcat’ concentration camps. Von Alvensleben was master of life and death in his region. Mere denunciation by a German or a tiny tick on a list were enough for his men to appear and cart some Pole off to a cellar, a garage or a copse and murder him.”

07.10.1939 Reported to Kurt Daluege that his Selbstschutz numbered 17,667 men and had killed 4,247 Poles by 05.10.1939.
03.11.1939 – 00.04.1945 Wirtschaftsführer (Economic Director) of the estate “Gross-Eichenbarleben” in Reichsgau Wartheland.
00.11.1939 – 00.12.1939 Assigned to Lublin to set up a Sonderdienst (Special Service) from the Ausbildungszentrale (Central Training Office) which was the only element remaining from his dissolved Selbstschutz command.
00.12.1939 – 00.12.1940 Attached to the Stab “Höherer SS- und Polizeiführer Ost”, Friedrich-Wilhelm Krüger (HQ: Krakow).
25.04.1940 - 01.08.1940 Assigned as reserve officer to SS-Regiment “Germania” / SS-V-Division, serving in France during the Western Campaign.
01.08.1940 Released from Waffen-SS service due to illness and relinquished his Waffen-SS rank.
01.08.1940 - 19.02.1944 Assigned to the Persönlichen Stab RFSS.
15.02.1941 - 15.04.1941 Temporarily attached for instruction in police duties to the Hauptamt Ordnungspolizei.
16.04.1941 - 15.05.1941 Temporarily attached for instruction to the Reichssicherheitshauptamt and Gestapo.
22.10.1941 - 09.11.1941 “SS- und Polizeiführer in Generalbezirk Tschernigow.” First holder of this post. Succeeded by Willy Schmelcher.
09.11.1941 - 06.10.1943 “SS- und Polizei-Standortführer in Simferopol.” First holder of this post. Succeeded by Heinz Roch.
06.12.1941 - 19.02.1944 “SS- und Polizeiführer in Generalbezirk Taurien-Krim” (HQ: Simferopol). First holder of this post. Succeeded by Heinz Roch. A report from von Alvensleben as SSPF in the Crimea, dated 19.04.1943, provides details of antipartisan operations conducted by his forces from 03.09.1942 to 18.04.1943. During that period, direct fighting took place on no less that 52 separate occasions, with the following results:

3,111 partisans eliminated by various means and a large quantity of arms and supplies captured.
1 German killed / 14 wounded
31 Romanians killed / 64 wounded
6 Tartars killed / 22 wounded

06.10.1943 - 11.02.1944 “SS- und Polizeiführer in Generalbezirk Nikolajew.” Ill during this period, and it is likely that he did not actually serve in this assignment. Post actually run by Paul Zimmermann until 10.10.1943, then by Rudolf Weiss who was the last holder of the post.
10.10.1943 - 11.02.1944 Out of service due to illness (dysentary, diptheria, and polyneuritis which he contracted in southern Russia); hospitalized at the SS-Lazarett in Hohenlychen from 01.11.1943, then sent to the Medical Clinic in Dresden under the care of Dr. med. Fritz Lange.
22.10.1943 – 19.02.1944 “Höherer SS- und Polizeiführer Schwarzes Meer” (HQ: Nikolajew) in area of Heeresgruppe A. First holder of this post which was formed from the “SS- und Polizeiführer Nikolajew” and he officially ran the two posts concurrently, though was hospitalized during this period. The HSSPF post was under the control of the “Höchster SS- und Polizeiführer Ukraine” (Hans-Adolf Prützmann). Von Alvensleben was succeeded in this HSSPF post by Richard Hildebrandt.
19.02.1944 – 00.04.1945 Führer of SS-Oberabschnitt “Elbe” and “Höherer SS- und Polizeiführer Elbe in den Gauen Halle-Merseburg, Sachsen und im Wehrkreis IV” (HQ: Dresden); also Gerichtsherr (Judge) of the SS- und Polizeigericht V. Succeeded Udo von Woyrsch.
01.10.1944 – 00.04.1945 “Höhere Kommandeur der Kriegsgefangenen” (Senior Commander of Prisoners of War) in Wehrkreis IV.

Postwar Confinement and Escape:
Arrested by British authorities, 05.1945. He was interned at the former Neuengamme concentration camp from which he escaped on 11.09.1946 by being smuggled out in a milk tanker (according to information provided by Karl Wolff on 27.11.1980). Briefly lived in Schochwitz until, with assistance from the Evangelical Church, he fled with his family to South America. He arrived in Buenos Aires in 1949 and lived there under the alias “Carlos Luecke.” Granted Argentinean citizenship on 15.09.1952, he lived in Buenos Aires (address: CC 22, 5194 Villa General Belgrano, Sierra Calamuchita, Argentina) until 07.1956. He then moved to Santa Rosa de Calamuchita where he lived on a lavish estate and worked as an inspector for the fish hatchery at Lake Herrero. A friend of Argentinean dictator Juan Peron, von Alvensleben / Luecke eventually rose to become head of the Argentine Department for Fishing, Hunting, and Yachting for the area R10111. He was also President of the soccer club “Clubo Atletico Union.” Sentenced to death in absentia by a Polish court in Torun after the war, he was later charged by the Amtsgericht München, on 31.01.1964, with the murder of at least 4,247 Poles as commander of the Selbstschutz in West Prussia.

Notes:
* Son of the estate owner and Prussian Generalmajor Ludolf von Alvensleben (born in Potsdam, 11.11.1844 / died in Halle an der Saale, 08.12.1912) and his wife Antoinette, née Freiin von Ricou (born in Darmstadt, 30.12.1870 / died in Halle an der Saale, 23.05.1950). One of his ancestors had been Adjutant-General to the Prussian Army.
* Married on 03.05.1924 to Melitta von Guaita (born 17.04.1905 in Demmin / Preussen; NSDAP-Nr.
963 000). Two sons (born 02.09.1942 and 24.05.1944) and two daughters (born 17.02.1925 and 02.03.1934).
* In a fitness report of 22.03.1935, Hans Döring wrote that von Alvensleben was energetic, practical, and very intelligent, and Karl Freiherr von Eberstein concurred with this assessment. Rudolf Lohse stated that von Alvensleben performed his light duties at the 1936 Reich Party Day with energy and ability. A report dated 15.06.1938 and signed by Kurt Kaul stated that von Alvensleben was very smart and sure of himself, egotistical and very independent. It went on to state that he gave of himself unconditionally in all tasks allotted to him and was very correct in all official matters. Emil Mazuw, in a fitness report dated 17.11.1938, gave a similar assessment.
