Krefeld Cemetery Help

Post by hellfighter1918 »

I am hoping to contact a German who knows where Krefeld Cemetery is and would be willing to find the grave of Lt. Josef Johann Schafer of Jasta 16. I would very much like to get a photo of his grave. Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Schafer was shot down in Flanders, October 10, 1918 by either Lt. P.G. Jones or Lt. T.C. Traill of RAF 20 Squadron

Thanks, Tom

I found the location

Rheinberg is 24 kilometres north of Krefeld and 13 kilometres south of Wesel. The cemetery is 3 kilometres south of the centre of the town of Rheinberg on the road to Kamp Lintfort. From the motorway 57, turn off at Rheinberg and at the T junction follow the B.510 (Rheinberger Strasse) in the direction Kamp Lintfort. The cemetery is a short way along this road on the right.

Josef Schaffer

Here is all I know about him:

Lt. Josef Johann Scaffer

Born - Hoffstetten June 6, 1895
Killed in Action - October 10, 1918 %E
Buried - Krefeld Cemetery

Schaffer arrived from Jastaschule 1 at Valencienne on January 11, 1918. He served in Jasta 16.

He had three victories;
1. A British SE5a flown by Lt. George F. Thomson of RAF 74 Squadron
2. A British Bristol F.2b flown by 2 Lt. P.G. Jones of RAF 20 Squadron
3. A British RE 8 (no further information)

Schaffer was shot down and killed on October 10, 1918, the same day he got his third victory. KIA in Flanders.

That's all I know. Is there an Imperial German cemetery anywhere near Krefeld?

I just saw that Krefeld has 7 or 8 cemeteries, 3-4 of them are big.
I got all phone numbers of them so i will talk to somebody.
