End of Imperial Austria
What happened to Emperor Charles of Austria after he was deposed in late 1918? We're more used to hearing about the Kaiser's departure for Holland...

Hello Phylo!
The last Habsburg Emperor Karl I (and as it was the Double-Monarchy Austria-Hungary back then he was also King Karl IV of Hungary) died in Madiera on April 1st, 1922. His wife, the last Empress Zita (born von Bourbon-Parma) died in 1989 in the ripe old age of nearly 97 years.
Kaiser Karl I went into exile in Switzerland in November 1918 and did try a brief political comeback in Hungary in 1921 but it didn't work out (surprise!). He managed to leave the Hungarian chaos with the help of the British and thus settled on Madeira.

Thanks for that! It was actually in collection with the British assistance that the question arose...given that George V was very soliticous and it was he who directed that help be sent - unlike his noted lack of concern for Cousin Nicky or his fate six months earlier...!
