Hello to all ; here goes something.................
The picture of the German Armed Forces (Wehrmacht) as a fully motorised army and epitome of the technical possibilities of their time is a legend, which was supported by the propaganda. The Wehrmacht actually was horse-drawn and mounted in its mass, the horse was one of their main transport asset.
The horse existence was approximately 42,000 by 1933 and rose to approximately 170.000 shortly before the war. On the beginning of WW II, on September 01 of 1939 the existence was of around 573.000 horses. Two years later were made available for the attack on the Soviet Union (22 June of 1941) some 750,000 horses.
Broadly speaking there were served as troop horses around 2.800.000 horses on the German side. The losses were high. By Dec 31 of 1944, the total losses at horses amounted since 22 June 1941 to 1.558.508. In the same period the monthly rate of losses was of 30.000 beasts (90 % of them in the Eastern front). In December of 1944 the total loss rate was of about 26.134 horses, about which 10,058 died by enemy action and scarcely 2500 by exhaustion with a total stocks in this month of approximately 930,000 horses. Additionally 40-80,000 horses per month were lost by sickness.

Re: Pferde im einsatz – Horses in action.
tigre, thanks for that, and that is just for the german army. other armies were not that horse oriented in terms of supply. but it's still a lot of horses, and they had to source and supply them to the army as well?
Re: Pferde im einsatz – Horses in action.
You're welcome guys ; yes Zepp sad numbers.....I could not find the mules' figures yet (may be someone else has any?). Charlieboy, I think only the US army and the British army as well, weren't "horse-drawn" armies (just my opinion. Cheers. Raúl M .

Re: Pferde im einsatz – Horses in action.
German army figures for Sept 41 through Dec 44 are 1.53 million with loss rates on the Eastern Front of 1,000 horses per day. So one has to figure with France and Poland added befor Sept 41 and including Jan-April 45 that the figure for the whole war must be close to 1.75 million horses lost.charlieboy wrote:anyone got any idea how many horses died in ww2 i bet it's a staggering figure?

Re: Pferde im einsatz – Horses in action.
usmedalman, that is a horrendous figure but i think you are near the mark there? bearing in mind the germans used a lot of Russian panje ponies, 'hope i have spelt that right' who were well adapted to the harsh conditions of that climate. i would not have thought records were kept of these animals, by the germans?

Hi Tigre.
I say no moore.
We used the same pack-saddle in the North Brig in the late 70`s.
Carrying 88mm mortar(also warbooty from ww2) and TOW.
Says something about German quality!
