Panzer Regiment 6 1935-1939.

Post by tigre »

Hello to all :D; something about this unit in particular...................................

Panzer Regiment 6, from creation to the Polish campaign.

Panzer Regiment 6 was created on October 1, 1935 from the Kraftfahr-Lehrkommando Zossen (motorized training command), the Reiter-Regiment 4 in Potsdam and the Panzernachbildungs-Kompanie (duplication) in Hannover. The regiment was subordinate to the 3. Panzer Division and its first Commander was Oberst Meyer. The regiment continued the tradition of the Gardes du Corpes regiment from the beginning when the I. Abteilung was established. This abteilung was established in 1934 when Major Lendle was ordered to establish a Panzer division in Potsdam, Wehrkreis III, from the 4 squadrons of the Reiter-Regiment 4 in process of dissolution. This Abteilung (detachment) was transferred to Zossen in Wehrkreis III. Parts of the Kraftfahrlehrkommando were already available from Zossen to complete the regiment. The unit was divided into two Pz. Abteilungen (armored detachments), each with four light tank companies.

The regimental rank was created on the basis of Königsberg's Kraftfahr-Abteilung 1, Wehrkreis I. The rank of the I. Abteilung was established under Major Lendle from the rank of the disbanded Reiter-Regiment 4, the 1st, 2nd and 4th companies of the squadrons of the same regiment. The 3rd company grew out of the Kraftfahrlehrkommando. The Staff of the II. Abteilung was created under the command of Major Linnarz from the Kraftfahrlehrkommando, as were the 6th and 8th companies. The 7th Company was a former squadron of the Reiter-Regiment. The 5th Company arose mainly from the 2nd Company of the Karfatfahr-Abteilung 6 in Hannover, which at the time was the 1st Panzernachbildungskompanie.

The companies moved to Zossen into corrugated iron barracks. First, the training focused on infantry service. The first training tanks (Übungspanzer) I soon arrived, allowing training to be moved to the ground. Since radio devices were still lacking, the flags were to be used as a means of communication.

Hello to all :D; more...................................

Panzer Regiment 6, from creation to the Polish campaign.

Already on April 20, 1936, the entire regiment was able to take part in the great parade for the Führer's birthday in Berlin. In July 1936 the regiment moved to its new garrison at Neuruppin in Military District III. Two companies of the regiment had to remain in Zossen until October 1936 to organize Panzer Regiment 8.

On June 14, 1936, the rest of the regiment moved by detachments (abteilung) and overland to the city where the new garrison was based. The Mayor made a speech as the regiment entered the city. The construction of the barracks was supervised by Maj. Linnarz from the beginning. The barracks were in the middle of the forest and very spacious. Nearby was the garrison officers' casino, which had a fine view of Lake Neuruppin. The nearby training area was quite small and had only a height of 66, so it was only suitable for tank training in low-level tactics.

Panzer Regiment 6, from creation to the Polish campaign.

To replace the companies that remained in Zossen, two new ones were created under the command of Hauptmann Schmidt-Ott and Hauptmann von Winterfeld respectively. Due to voluntary registration, the regiment had to surrender 4 officers and 160 NCOs to integrate the Condor Legion in Spain in 1937. They were officially discharged and did not rejoin the regiment until 1938 after their return.

Panzer Regiment 6, from creation to the Polish campaign.

In addition, 9 officers and 335 non-commissioned officers and soldiers had to be transferred to Zinten in Wehrkreis I to organize the I./ PR 10. The Commander of the II. Abteilung, Major Linnarz, transferred to Panzer Corps Staff as IIa. Major Rothenburg took his place. Major Ilgen of the Regimental Staff was transferred to the Staff of the 2. Panzer Division. He was replaced by Major von Lewinski, the former adjutant of the 4th Cavalry Regiment. Major Munzel was transferred to the Army Personnel Office. In April 1937, at the Wilhelmsplatz in Berlin, the Banners were handed over to the two detachment commanders.

At the end of May 1937, the 3 Signal platoons of the regiment, together with parts of Signal Detachment 39 (Nachrichten Abteilung), practiced in the Rathenow area, training in radio liaison within the grouping. On July 9, 1937, the crews and their tanks were transported to Putlos. This was the first time that they executed firing exercises against combat targets aiming towards the sea.

The regiment then executed exercises with the division and the 4. Infantry Division in various operations at the Jüterbog military training area. There were also visits to the detachments. In August 1937, all vehicles for the first major exercises were overhauled at the Bergen military training area. On a night march, the regiment traveled 100 kilometers from Bergen to the starting position for maneuvers in pouring rain.

Panzer Regiment 6, from creation to the Polish campaign.

On September 25, 1937, the regiment assembled in the Teterow area with Panzer Regiment 5. Both regiments carried out a large concentrated attack on September 26, 1937, in front of Hitler and his guest Mussolini.

On November 4, 1937, new recruits arrived at the regiment. At the end of 1937, the 5th company had to be handed over by the unit, so that it was later used in the organization of the Panzer Regiment 31, as well as other parts of the regiment.
