Hello neonors :D; something dealing with it.......................

The VIII AK in Upper Silesia.

On Aug 31 1939 at 19:00 hours, the 2. Company of I./ IR 84 (Major d.R. Henrici) under Oberleutnant Fiedler left its garrisons at Keithkasernen heading towards the Schönwald through the Paul-Keller’s street; several families from Gleiwitz were lined up on either side of the road. The night from Aug 31 to Sep 01 1939 was clear and cool, the temperature was some ºC over zero. We wore dark camouflages over ours uniforms. The Company was deployed on the ground as follows: 1. Platoon right, 2. Platoon left and 3. Platoon as reserve. To the Left was Oberleutnant Schlabitz’s 1. Company of I./ IR 84.

At the end of August 1939, the regiment (IR 7 - Oberst Wolf Boysen) left its barracks and marched eastward. In Ratibor it was used to dig trenches.

On Sep 01, 1939 at 04:45 hours all the divisions of the VIII. Army Corps under General d Inf Ernst Busch crossed the border of the Reich. The 28 ID (Generalleutnant v. Obstfelder) advanced in the direction of Orzesze without enemy resistance; the IR 7 crossed the Polish frontier near Nieder-Wilcza. In the forest between the road Orzesze - Bujakow, Gostyn and Laziska it found the first weaker resistance, which could be broken quickly.

The 8 ID (Generalleutnant Koch) met some resistance after entering in Polish territory, the I./IR 84 of Major d.R. Henrici found resistance in the border town of Knurow but after several fire blows of the machine guns, the Poles left the spot and the Platoon of Leutnant Erich Mende reached coverless ground between Ornontowitz and Orzesze where it received artillery fire and underwent the first casualty Schütze Mendla (KIA); IR 38 (Oberst Sczelinski) crossed the border with Gleiwitz at 05:00 hours. In the next two days, the unit fought several skirmishes with the field positions at Nikolai and Wyry-Tychy.

Both divisions had reached the highway Orzesze - Bujakow almost at the same time. In the wooded area between that route, Gostyn and laziska were located Polish advance posts which withdrew that very afternoon. Around 17:00 hours, the 28 ID was in front of the Polish Main defensive positions composed of wire obstacles and half finished forts, especially the III. /IR 49 found serious resistance in the neighborhoods of Gostyn offered by the 2. Fortress Company (Maj Amon) . Still in the late afternoon the division took the wooded land lying there, but it could not carry out yet the order of the Commander of the Division to break through that defensive zone.

The 8 ID could take Laziska against heavy infantry resistance with artillery support and brought forward the mass of its artillery, which took firing positions in the neighborhood of Laziska - Orzesze. The Commander of the Army Corps had the impression that the breakthrough of the enemy defensive position would take place in the sector of the 28 ID and directed the reserve of the Army Corps, the IR 28, behind that division. At dusk came the order from the Army Corps stating that the attack should be continued in its respective zones of action.

Leutnant Erich Mende (2. /IR 84) stated that: finally at dusk the German shells whistled over our heads towards the Polish positions in Orzesche. That night we freezed miserably. The Army Corps' HQ was set in a Community house in Orzesze; with the advent of the night, also came the shots because supposedly some "insurgents" had attacked the German troops .....................

Hello neonors :D; something more.......................

The VIII AK in Upper Silesia.

The VIII. AK had attacked the Operational Group Silesia (General Sadowski) - GO Slask - from the west, rejecting the left wing of the 55 DP (Res) on Zora and the 23 DP on Tychy. Despite the strong resistance expected in the area of action of both German divisions (the 28. ID was to attack a wooded area and the 8. ID was to attack a fortified zone), the Army Corps did not issue a general time of attack. The 28. ID set the time of the attack at 05:00 AM and the 8. ID did it at 07:30 hours; but at 05:30 hours the 8. ID received the order to engage the enemy around Wyry as to cover the northern flank of the 28. ID.

September 2, 1939 dawned with a dense fog; as ordered by the Commander of the Army Corps, the 8. ID should take advantage of the artillery fire and the fog to storm the Polish positions at 06:30 hours (the division had assembled a mass of 27 artillery batteries). Erich Mende recalled, the company received as attack direction the heights Nikolai-Tychy and should reach the deposits of gangue (Coalfield) around Orzesche. On this day the 2. / IR 84 lost his chief Oberleutnant Fiedler and Leutnant Erich Mende took over it.

In the early hours of the morning the attack of both divisions of infantry won but little ground. During the late morning the 28. ID could finally penetrate the wooded area located northeast of Gostyn and then broke through the enemy positions. The Commander of the Army Corps had considered that the 28. ID shift their last regiment (IR 7) to Kobior on the southern flank of the adversary and reinforced it with the Pi. 47, but taking in account the news of the break in Gostyn brought by the wounded Quartermaster of the Army Corps, Hauptmann i.G. Barchewitz, the order was changed and was committed there the reserve regiment of the Army Corps, the IR 28. At dusk the Division had reached the eastern edge of the wooded area with its southern elements, while the other regiments, including the IR 28 were staggered more to the left. After breaking the fortified positions in Gostyn, the IR 7 reached Chelm.

The attack of the 8. ID had little success in the early hours of the morning. Around noon it had conquered half of Laziska. The day was very foggy so affected the observation of the effects of the artillery fire. However the attack finally stopped altogether. To resume it again, the Commander of the Army Corps now moved all the artillery, including that belonging to the 28. ID towards Wyry. Also to cover the expanding northern flank of the 8. ID, the 239. ID due north of the 8. ID, advanced on Gieraltowitz and Ornontowitz having the Height 340 west of Wiry as it objective. At dusk the division reached Bujakow and managed to deploy part of its artillery.

The 8. ID never could take advantage of the the mass of the artillery support, due to liaison problems mainly because Polish soldiers scattered around the area cut the cables. But despite all in the evening the division managed to penetrate into enemy positions in Wyry. For the next day it was anticipated the continuation of the rupture towards the Vistula River. The IR 28 returned to the 8. ID and to clear the big wooded area around Kobior was engaged there the SS-Standarte Germania, the last reserve of the Army Corps.

On the second day of the war, the armored train No. 54 "Grozny" covered the Polish infantry near the town of Tychy (south of Katowice) and supported the attack of the III./ 75 pp (23 DP). Polish infantry attacked southward along the railway line. Although the enemy had positions in the forest, the train moved with the first line of attack, causing heavy losses to the III. / IR 48 (28 ID). After the Poles forced the Germans to withdraw from the forest, the train was used to evacuate the wounded to Tychy.

In the afternoon it returned to action. The attempt to use the assault platoon failed because the fire of enemy machine guns and mortars. The train delayed the enemy until evening, despite several attack from artillery and from the air. Unfortunately, at the end of the fight, Cpt. Rybczyński was killed while on a reconnaissance in a light tank. The command was assumed by Cpt. Józef Kulesza and the train was moved to the small town of Mysłowice (Myslowitz), according to the orders of the Polish Army Commander.

Hello to all :D; something more.......................

Military operations in southern Poland.

For General Kustron, who was promoted to this rank in March 1939, the war began on the night of August 25-26, when a German militia attacked the Mosty railway station and attempted to seize the railway tunnel under the Jabłonka Pass. The soldiers of the 21st DPG (mountain infantry division) commanded by him from 1935 repelled the attackers and forced them to flee. From September 1 to 2, this unit was part of GO "Bielsko" (Grupa Operacyjna - Operational Group), from September 3 in the composition of GO "Boruta" under Brig. Mieczysław Boruta-Spiechowicz, defended itself against German attacks in the region of Cieszyn. In the following days, it was in retreat, in the general direction of Krakow, fighting on September 5 a victorious battle with the enemy at Mogilany.

Then it led heavy fights at Wiśnicz and Bochnia, suffering heavy losses. After retreating beyond the Dunajec, General Kustroń received an order to take over the defense of the San River in the Krzeszów - Sieniawa section. On September 9, new battalions of the 21st DPG began to be formed from the broken and mixed units. However, on September 11, German armored forces broke through the defense on the San River and moved towards Oleszyce - Lubaczów - Tomaszów Lubelski. The threatened units of GO "Boruta" (21st DPG and 6th DP (Infantry Division) of Brigadier General Bernard Mond) had to retreat and go to the northern bank of the Tanew River, into the forests near Biłgoraj.

On September 7, 1939, a ruthless war reached the territory of the Lubaczów poviat (county). On that day, the Germans bombed Lubaczów, Cieszanów, Narol and Oleszyce. On September 12, German troops seized the Lubaczów poviat without a fight. Some Ukrainians in Lubaczów and Oleszyce welcomed the invading Germans with flowers.

On September 13, in the command of the GO "Boruta" in Biłgoraj, a decision was made that its units should take over the area of Cieszanów - Oleszyce - Lubaczów. The purpose of these actions was to secure for the entire forces of the Army "Krakow" uder Maj. Gen. Antoni Szylling, the key road junction on the march to Lwów/Lviv and the intersection of the communication of German armored forces in the direction of Jarosław - Oleszyce - Tomaszów Lubelski. The 21st DPG was to march to Oleszyce, and the 6th DP to Cieszanów.

The commanders of both units agreed to cooperate. However, the units of the 6th Infantry Division left their staging area only on September 15th, while the 21st DPG was on the march from the evening of September 13th. The delay of General Mond's units had disastrous consequences, because the German units, which the 6th Infantry Division encountered near Podsośnina Łukowska, began to enter the gap between the two divisions. Subsequent attempts to break the enemy's position did not bring success and General Mond ordered a retreat to the defensive positions near Aleksandrów.

Hello to all :D; something more.......................

Military operations in southern Poland.

As the Polish 6th Infantry Division fought with German troops to achieve a breakout, the main forces of the 21st DPG set out on the morning of 15 September from the forests near Cewków and Moszczanica for starting positions near Oleszyce and Dachnowo. The division's Command Post assumed that only enemy security troops would be stationed in this area. Meanwhile, on the night of September 14, German forces from the 45th Infantry Division arrived at the scene.

After heavy fighting and exhausting marches, the numerical strength of General Kustron's division dwindled from approximately 17,000 soldiers and officers to approximately 4,000. According to the plan, the Border Protection Corps Regiment (KOP) was to attack Dachnów and then the eastern edges of Lubaczów; the 4th Podhale Rifle Regiment (pułk Strzelców Podhalańskich) along the Dzików Nowy - Horaj-Uszkowce highway in Oleszyce, and then to the western suburbs of Lubaczów; the 202nd Rifle Regiment (pułk strzelców) towards Lebieda - Miłków na Zabiałą, Oleszyce Stare and Stare Sioło. The remaining forces were to cover the attack.

The plan was not carried out due to delays in the march of some units that got lost in the woods. Only the KOP regiment reached Dachnów on the morning of September 15. The regiment's attack on open ground was a temporary success. The main Polish troops surprised the German 2. Company of the 130. Infantry Regiment (2./IR 130) while serving breakfast. Polish soldiers occupied the western part of the city. Soon, however, a strong enemy counterattack forced the Polish troops to withdraw to the edge of the forest near Dachnowo.

The positions of the KOP regiment were repeatedly attacked by the Germans until nightfall. They lost many soldiers and 8 tanks, and the dressing station at the school in Oleszyce was so full of wounded that some of them were put on straw in the church. The German chronicler of the 45.ID, Rudolf Gschöpf, recalled the battles near Oleszyce: On the left, between Futor and Uszkowce, the III. Battalion of the 133. Infantry Regiment (III./IR 133) joined the attack. Here the terrain was unfavorable to us. The battalion had to fight its way through vast meadows to a dense forest, from where well-hidden Poles beat up our soldiers in series. The lack of shovels made it difficult for us to dig. On the right wing there was close combat and sharp duels with hand grenades.

On the events that took place in Oleszyce at that time, the Reverend Józef Mroczkowski in the "Chronicle of the parish in Oleszyce" [original spelling - T.R.]: in the nearby woods, more important Polish troops were hidden, [...] suddenly initiating a cannonade over the city. A cannonball hit the cornice of the attic of the church, badly breaking the ceiling and wall. The gunner was aiming at the church tower, on which a concealed German observer was located. He too, immediately, pale with fear, was on the ground, he fell, they didn't kill him. The German rearguard at Oleszyce began an assault on the forest. (...) The Polish soldiers, hidden in the woods, let the Germans approach and then opened fire with machine guns. Apparently a considerable number of Germans died then, and Hauptman himself said angrily that he had lost many of them. A dozen Germans were buried under the church."

Hello to all :D; something more.......................

Military operations in southern Poland.

At dusk on September 15, the Germans captured the edge of the forest and the KOP regiment had to withdraw into it. The remaining Polish troops also established combat contact with the enemy. Almost along the entire front, the troops of the 21st DPG met stiff German resistance. General Kustroń ordered to stop the attack and take defensive positions until the arrival of the 6th Infantry Division.

The division command was located on the eastern edge of Dzików Nowy. Soon, when it was threatened by German patrols, it had to move to the Lebiedzie forest lodge and from there to Dzików Stary. During the movement, the division Staff was ambushed; several NCOs died there. The combats of the 21st DPG took place all night from September 15 to 16 in conditions of total encirclement. The losses were great. The division's Dressing Station at the Dzików Stary school was overcrowded with wounded.

In this situation, on the morning of September 16, General Kustroń decided to withdraw the main forces of the division to the forests of the Moszczanica region, from there to try to join the forces of the GO "Boruta". At the head of a detachment of about 200 soldiers, consisting of the Staff, the radio service and the remnants of the mixed battalion of the 3rd Podhale Rifle Regiment (3. pułku Strzelców Podhalańskich) and 3 Vickers tanks as cover for the command of the division, passed Koziejówka to the west of the Ułazów Forest.

After leaving the clearing, around 14:00 hours, the unit was ambushed by the "Schubert" battalion of the pursuing regiment, belonging to the German 28. Infantry Division of Lieutenant General Hans von Obstfelder. General Kustroń was seriously wounded and died shortly after. The Germans took about 60 soldiers as prisoners, including 12 officers. One of the Vickers was destroyed and the other two fell into German hands.

Hello to all :D; something more.......................

Military operations in southern Poland.

This is how described the last hours of General Józef Kustroń's life the quartermaster of the 21st DPG, Cap. dipl. Jan Kaliński: We formed a unit of 200 people together with the general and started our march to the Kołodziejówka [should be Koziejówka - N.T.] forest. The inferno of artillery fire and the German attack does not weaken for a moment. Patrols of new enemy units begin to emerge from Sieniawa's direction. We are still waiting to get out. After walking about 2 km, artillery and machine gun fire hits us. We entered the forest Kołodziejówka [Koziejówka - N.T.]. The hill behind the forest was occupied by the Germans. To the east, numerous groups of them enter the forest. The only possibility is to make breakout attempts in a westerly direction.

We came to a large clearing. There is no one in sight. Patrols pass unhindered. We go. When we entered, we received fire from some heavy machine guns from a distance of 50 to 60 meters. Any reaction was impossible. The whole unit was mowed down like with a sickle, a few steps away from me, General Kustroń was hit several times. The Germans continue to shoot those who lie. Only when all movement stopped completely did they dare to come out: 'Put your hands up, surrender.'

The Germans brought the body of General Kustron in a cart to Ułazów. They wrapped him in so-called tent cloth and deposited him in the courtyard of the Greek Catholic presbytery. On September 17 they were buried with honors next to the local church. The funeral was attended by a small group of Polish officers (prisoners of war), several residents of Ułazów, and a German platoon, who fired a volley of honor. At the end of 1939, the family of General Kustron received the return of their belongings through the Polish Red Cross, the general's personal data, enclosing a letter from the command of the 28. ID with information about his death and the place of his burial.

In the Battle of Oleszyce, the weakened 21st DPG held off the three times stronger enemy division and also pinned part of the German 28th Infantry Division, thus relieving the Polish 6th Infantry Division at Aleksandrów. The German 45th Infantry Division, as a result of the fighting on September 15 and 16, lost 124 killed (including 7 officers) and almost 300 wounded, which accounted for almost 80 percent of the total losses suffered during the fighting in Poland in September 1939. Polish losses amounted to approximately 100 killed and over 300 wounded (including some 120 seriously wounded). Some 2,000 soldiers were taken prisoner. Only a small force from the division managed to break out of the encirclement and get past Tanew.

Hello to all :D; something more.......................

Military operations in southern Poland.

The National Defense Battalion "Rzeszów".

The National Defense Battalion "Rzeszów" was one of eight battalions of the Subcarpathian National Defense Brigade in Przemyśl. In the summer of 1939, it was placed at the disposal of the commander of the 2nd Regiment of the KOP "Karpaty", who held the position "Slovakia". It participated in hostilities as part of the 3rd Mountain Brigade.

The Battalion Commander was Major Tadeusz Ochęduszko. The various companies were commanded by: 1st ("Rzeszów"), Lieutenant Marian Pobożniak, 2nd ("Łańcut"), Captain Stanisław Kwak, 3rd ("Leżajsk"), Captain Stanisław Saniński. The battalion also included a heavy machine gun platoon and a battalion command unit (adjutant, medic, patrols: sanitary, communications, engineers, non-commissioned officers, and quartermaster). Total battalion strength was 3 senior officers, 13 reserves, and 396 enlisted men, including 45 pre-recruitment volunteers. The armament consisted of French weapons: 2 heavy machine guns Hotchkiss wz. 14, 27 light machine guns Chauchat wz. 15 and kb Berthier wz. 16. Machine guns were not received until August 25, so the soldiers were trained while traveling by rail to defensive positions and already in their positions. However, uniforms and equipment were incomplete, blankets, bandages, sanitary equipment and helmets were completely missing.

On August 27, 1939, at 3:00 p.m. Major T. Ochęduszko received a dispatch from the Commander of OK No. X Przemyśl, Brig. Gen. Wacław Wieczorkiewicz, on getting the battalion into combat readiness. All its subunits mobilized for 8:00 p.m. on the same day. Despite a series of difficulties, on August 28, 1939, at 7:00 a.m. the battalion was embarked for rail transport and at 1330 hours it arrived at Iwonicz station. Then, after unloading, lunch and rest, he marched to the city of Iwla (10:00 p.m.) and subordinated to the Commander of the 2nd Regiment KOP "Karpaty", Lieutenant Colonel Janowi Zachodnemu as a reserve. Immediately, even before midnight, the battalion was ordered to move to the town of Myscowo (about 6 km from Iwla) and carry out fortification works in the Krępno section. The next morning, separate groups, that is, those who did not participate in the training, began the fortification work.

On August 31, the excavation of firing positions continued and training was given in the handling of machine guns and sanitary patrols. At that time, the strength of the battalion decreased as the 1st Platoon, left for the ON Battalion "Krosno" to occupy the hill 610 - "Ropianka". That day, in the morning, Major Ochęduszko left for Krosno, where he reported the status of the battalion to Colonel Jan Stefan Kotowicz, Commander of the ON Subcarpathian Brigade (renamed 3rd Mountain Brigade, BG). In addition, the Commander of the 2nd KOP Regiment "Karpaty" took over the defensive section "Iwonicz". The battalion had only 1/2 fire units, the rest being given to a separate platoon.

Hello to all :D; you're welcome noeneors . More.......................

Military operations in southern Poland.

The National Defense Battalion "Rzeszów".

On September 1, 1939 at 05:30 hours, about 35 enemy bombers flew over Myscowa towards Krosno. They flew several more times that day, bombing targets in the Krosno, Jasło and Jedlicze areas. Next, the machine gun servants, the communications team and the sanitary patrols were trained. On September 02, further defensive work was carried out in the Krępna section and training of the 1st Company of Lieutenant Pobożniak. By order of the commander of the "Iwonicz" section, it was conducted a night raid on a Slovak-Ruthenian-German subversive unit in the Huta Polańska area, which the day before overwhelmed the outpost of Battalion ON Krosno, wounding three soldiers of the polish army. A detachment consisting of two platoons attacked the gang with a force of more than one rifle company, supported by 2 heavy machine guns. It was located in a safe position in a wooded border area.

On September 03 at approximately 07:00 hours the enemy was forced to flee to Slovakia, leaving 2 dead and 3 seriously wounded, as well as weapons and equipment, including 3 machine guns, 16 carbines and 19 fully equipped backpacks. The outpost of Battalion ON "Krosno" regained its previously lost position. The rest of the battalion continued to carry out fortification work and machine gun exercises.

On the afternoon of September 04, a telephone order was received from the commander of the "Iwonicz" section to make an excursion to point 664 "Dębi Wierch", 2 km to the southeast. from the city of Radocyna, distant from the battalion's position about 24 km and attack point 675 "Czeremcha", 1 km south of the city of Ożenna, 18 km from the battalion.

On September 06 at 03:30 hours both raids carried out by forces of the 3rd Company at "Dębie Wierch" under the command of Captain Saniński and by the 1st Platoon of the 1st Company at the point "Czeremcha" (under the command of the 2nd Lieutenant Józef Patryn) did not produce the expected effect, because the enemy (Slovaks) was well secured and was not taken by surprise. The Chief of the 3rd Company, Captain Stanisław Saniński, who was killed, did not return from action.
