Hello to all :D; here goes a little history of another German infantry division that fought alongside the Italians until it was diverted to Stalingrad ..................

The 62 ID in 1942 - from Kharkov to Stalingrad.

Beginnings.

The 62 ID was organized as a division of the 2nd wave on August 26, 1939 in Kanth, near Breslau, in WK VIII on the basis of the Artillerie-Kommandeur 8. The Artillerie- Kommando 8, Neisse, led by General Walter Keiner, provided the Staff of the new division. As an emblem of the unit it was adopted half-moon of Silesia with the cross.

The units organized within the 62 ID were:

Infanterie- Regiment 164, Oberst Rudolf Graf von Schmettow
Infanterie- Regiment 183, Oberstleutnant Guittienne
Infanterie- Regiment 190, Oberst Max- Hermann von Loefen
Artillerie- Regiment 162, Oberst Jobst Freiherr von Buddenbrock.
Aufklärungs- Abteilung 162,
Nachrichten- Abteilung 162,
Panzerjäger- Abteilung 162, Major Walter Gabriel
Pionier- Batallion 162, Hauptmann Bennecke

Hello to all :D; more follows..................

The 62 ID in 1942 - from Kharkov to Stalingrad.

1942.

With the 183 Infantry Regiment in Russia.

In February 1942, I volunteered for military service. On March 01, 1942, said goodbye to my neighbors and family. My father took me to the station with the cart and said goodbye a second time, was very special to me, "returns home safely." With the false expectation that the war would probably not be long before achieving victory over Russia, I encouraged my father and told him that in a few months would be back here.

The station master gave me a handshake and said "beware the Russians, who are true masters of their country!, And took the suitcase behind me to the waiting room. When the train arrived, also came to me the first feeling of nostalgy. I hung onto the window and waved to my father in my mind one thing: When will see you again?.

We received instruction in the infantry and as engineer at the barracks in Breslau / Wroclaw. After several days we had received the equipment and uniforms, we were split into platoons and companies. Then the military training ran as follows: marching, field exercises, practices at the firing range and so on almost every day. There was nothing to laugh about. We just wanted to make us fit for the front.

Defensive fighting around Kharkov - May 1942.

On May 12, 1942 at 03:00 hours it was launched the Soviet assault, aiming to seize Kharkov again. Wrapped in heavy and costly fighting the 62 ID and its neighbors retreated toward the south of Taranowka, but around May 25, 1942 had regained the lost ground by mean of counterattacks. In late May of 1942 the IR 515 had returned to the 294 ID and the 62 ID had recovered its IR 190.

On June 13, 1942 reached a new higher-order which stated in its point 5: Army Group B should detach infantry units towards the Tschira-Kriuscha sector in order to relieve there the 4th Panzer Army elements, then secure the eastern flank and the rear of Army Group A on the line Tschir - Kriuscha - Don. To this end the 294 ID and the 62 ID are at disposal of the OKH.

On July 5, 1942, the IR 208 returned to the 79 ID and the IR 183 to the 62 ID.

Al frente Oriental.

Towards the eastern front.

After completing his training in Breslau / Wroclaw, the volunteer Gerhard Schuhmann with other 23 comrades, was ordered to march to the front. Once there, he had to join the IR 183 of the 62 ID in Kharkov (Ukraine). The transportation was by truck and rail from Wroclaw by Radom, Lusk, Zhitomir, Kiev, Poltava up to Kharkov. On the way they were joined by other contingents for the 62 ID so the troop had grown to 150 men. The company arrived up in Kharkov on June 09, 1942, the front was already very close.

They were transported to Osnowa, a southern suburb of the city and there divided by regiments; Schuhmann with other 8 colleagues joined the 8. / IR 183 and were moved further south to Lewkowka, where the IR 183 occupied defensive positions in a relatively quiet sector in order to recover from the intense fighting after the encirclement (Soviet offensive of May 1942). There they were greeted by the commander of the regiment and company commander. Regularly hostile aircraft or artillery, sent its good mornings greetings. Soon followed the order to move to the east behind the river Donez.

On the march.

But the soldier's life was still beautiful, exhausting but beautiful. We continued our march on the heels of the Russians. The 62 ID marched between the rivers Donez and Tschir in the context of the summer offensive called "Operation Blue" (Unternehmen Blau). Due to the intense heat we marched during the night.

Up to Kupjansk the regiments 179 (IR 179) and 183 (IR 183) shared the dusty road. Once the river Oskol had been reached by Kupjanks both regiments were separated; the IR 179 crossed the stream through the destroyed bridge over the Oskol and established a bridgehead east of the river, while the IR 183 secured the city and its surrounding area on the west bank of river. Here the IR 179 fought with a Russian unit in retreat which tried to save time and avoid the crossing of the regiment.

Once the bridgehead was secured and the anti-tank troops (panzerjägern) got there IR 183 was ordered to march northwards along the western shore of Oskol and cross the stream by Kamjenka in order to move along the railway to Baljuki. Having secured this location (Baljuki), the IR 183 should continue in the direction of Bogustchar towards the river Don which was the objective also for the IR 179.

Once crossing the river Oskol by Kamjenka it was received a report that about 4 kilometers south of Urassowo a Russian battalion also moved towards Baljuki. The IR 183 was ordered to attack the enemy before Baljuki and prevent the enemy could strenghtened its position within the locality. So the regiment hastened its march to approach the opponent which was about 6 kilometers due north.

Baptism of fire.

For the action the IR 183 had been reinforced with elements of the Pz Jäg Abt and an artillery group, but the artillery still went marching far away to the rear and the anti-tank guns came after we had gone into action against the enemy. The Russians marched in close order, not knowing of our presence. The location of the enemy was sent to the artillery but nothing happened, bursts of fire did not come. It was ordered to increase march rhythm for the tired companies in order to approach the enemy located about two kilometers away.

Now came the message informing that the artillery was ready to receive fire mission. The coordinates were passed again by radio and soon a barrage of fire fell amidst of the enemy vanguard, the opponents fled in all directions, however the bulk of the Russian regiment faced the German. Even as the German troops were placing the machine guns , some Russians soldiers were willing to launch a counterattack. The artillery shifted its fire to stop the Soviet assault as our Advance guard was composed only of about 80 men, a thin line to face the enemies which outnumbered the German 5 to 1. As the third salvo of artillery was fired also joined the fire the anti-tank guns. Meanwhile our lines had been strengthened and thanks to the fire of the heavy weapons, the Russians could be rejected when they had reached some 200 meters before the German line inflicting some casualties. On July 11, 1942 Gerhard Schuhmann had survived its baptism of fire.

The Commander of IR 183, Oberst Drawe, spoke saying: that it had been a glorious day in the history of the regiment. The fallen of IR 183, 28 NCOs and soldiers plus 2 officers were buried in a forest located some 2 kilometers from the village.

The front along the Don River.

After Bogutschar the regiment marched westwards and then southwards along the Don River up to Migulinskaja then to Mescherjakowski where it stayed about three weeks in position. From there it went then to Belogorskij - Baskowskaja. This last town was facing Weschenskaja, which became a critical sector, because here there were two major river crossing with intense fighting.

Previously there were only skirmishes where the Russians attacked the German positions or where the Germans carried out Night and Fog actions (Nacht-und Nebelaktion) across the river and marching through the forest area to show that the master was at home (Herr im Hause) while they blew up forts and bridges. The artillery on both sides, did not pause for a day, therefore sooner or later the German artillery suffered from a lack of ammunition and there were times when it could not intervene in the fight, even when the enemy carried out a coup de main.

Re: On the Way to Catastrophe - Summer 1942.

Hello to all :D; more follows..................

The 62 ID in 1942 - from Kharkov to Stalingrad.

1942.

With the 183 Infantry Regiment in Russia.

The front along the Don River.

This led to September 17, 1942: it was a cold and rainy night. The Russians crossed the river to the wooded area located there and they used assault boats also. The security line was caught, perhaps the guard was asleep, the minefields were cleared and all of this without even a shot was heard. When the Soviets had secured the beachhead in the loop of the Don, the enemy artillery opened a heavy fire: the signal for the attack. At the same time, infantry reinforcements crossed in assault boats on both sides of Belogorskij. Artillery fire fell on our positions, one enemy battalion had crossed and then attacked us with determination. At 02:00 hours the artillery battle began and we could tell that something was in progress, this lasted until 03:00 hours. Until that time the Russians had inflicted heavy casualties to the Germans and had established a strong point.

The Russians were immobilized by our machine guns until the weapons stopped firing due overheating or lack of ammunition and then the Soviets advanced, dragging a certain death at the troops which could not withdraw at the last minute. The German positions were eliminated in close combat and the strong points were subjected to concentrations of artillery until they were destroyed.

Except for a few ineffective bursts, the German artillery almost had not taken part in the struggle. On the morning of September 18, 1942, the bridgehead was extended until 6 km wide and 1.5 km in depth. Fortunately, the Russians not continued their attack and were devoted to securing the position reached. The enemy did not realize that in front was a worn out battalion with a strengh which not exceeding 200 men, many of whom were wounded. The hard German resistance convinced the Soviets that had crashed into a defensive line much stronger than it was.
