Hello to all :D; more follows.............................

Operations on the Kalmuck Steppe - 1942.

3. Operations on the steppe.

The patrol led by Leutnant Schliep turned toward the southeast of the route to Astrakhan with the task of finding out whether there was a railway line between Baku - Kizlyar - Astrakhan along the coast of the Caspian Sea or not. Schliep found the railway line on the second day of his patrol and managed to reach the station of Zenzeli with the light armored vehicles and the engineers group, there the Germans destroyed a train loaded with fuel coming from Baku and the interpreter answered a call from Astrakhan asking if they could dispatch the train from that location, but the insistence of the interpreter urging to dispatch the train alerted the Soviets who gave the alarm. The patrol tried to continue towards Bassy, but it was impossible and they came back towards Utta where it arrived on September 17, 1942.

The first stop of the patrol led by Oberleutnant Euler was Justa, some 70 kilometers north of Utta, the town was strongly occupied by the enemy. Then the fraction shifted to the east to Ohasyk. Until then there had been three contacts with the enemy: the first a column moving rapidly toward the German forces and proved to be a herd of antelopes of the taiga; the journey continued without incident until Burdshal when south of the source it was seen a truck with 14 Russians, when opening fire on the vehicle, it tried to escape but the motorcyclists were faster, one escaped and the rest were captured. Around 10 kilometers west of Ohasyk the column was attacked by three Il 2, losing a truck and a light vehicle.

Before Buka the patrol received fire from a Russian truck loaded with armed civilians from about 100 meters, after a counterattack one of them was captured and the rest fled in the vehicle. The second night elapsed some 5 kilometers east of Berkulte Schowgur. The next day, September 16, 1942, the trip went on another 5 kilometers until reaching ground impassable for vehicles other than Four-wheel drive. At 07:30 hours the patrol linked with a reconnaissance aircraft Fokke-Wulf.

On September 17, 1942 at 04:30 hours the patrols Gottlieb and Euler started together its return to Utta where they arrived at 12:00 hours after traveling about 400 kilometers in four days. There had been no casualties among the personnel, but it was inevitable that some vehicles suffered mechanical problems in the engine due to the sand of the desert and so some were sent yet to Woroschilowsk in order to be checked by the Panzerwerkstatt 545.

Operations on the Kalmuck Steppe - 1942.

4. In search of Panzerwerkstatt 545.

On September 18, 1942 at 04:00 hours marching westwards, 120 km to Elista; we got a drum of 100 liters of oil. The journey continued another 80 km westwards to Divnoje. Then another 180 kms to Woroschilowsk where we arrived on September 19, 1942, to know that the Panzerwerkstatt 545 had shifted towards the Caucasus.

We got oil for the engine and set off on September 20, 1942 to Kusawka, another 150 km. On the way we had a puncture and as we had no spare tire, we lock the wheel to avoid touching the ground and continued driving. During the trip we did not see a single soldier.

On September 21, 1942 we reached Kusewka and the supply route of the German Army in the Caucasus. As the 8x8 Panzerspähwagen now consumed as much oil as fuel, the engine gave up at last and we had to stop at a roadside. The workshop was at Georgiewsk, some 60 kms so I got a ride and came back the next day with a trailer; on September 22, 1942 the 8x8 vehicle was finally in the workshop. On the second day of the stay I had a fever and by the third day while I was delirious a comrade went looking for a doctor who gave me quinine and that helped a lot.

Operations on the Kalmuck Steppe - 1942.

4. In search of Panzerwerkstatt 545.

On September 28, 1942 I got the order to achieve Utta, and the next day I packed my backpack and started the journey. My first destination was the city of Pyatigorsk, located about 60 km WSW amid the Caucasus Mountains. I hitchhiked to a truck of the Waffen-SS, which left me in the middle of the city market. Everything looked like in times of peace, and had all kinds of food in abundance. I bought 3 kg of oranges and a large melon and sat down to eat at a guest house garden, where you could see the distant snow-capped peaks of 5,633 m high of Mount Elbrus.

Around noon I went on an electric train for Minerralnyje Vody, where I spent the night. The next morning I took an express train with personnel on leave, traveling home by Rostov. I traveled about 100 kilometers until it stopped in a town whose name escapes me. From here we continue on a truck of supplies from the army for a relatively good route towards Woroschilowsk, where I arrived late at night.

The following night we travelled in own supply trains of our division to Divnoje. I was lucky enough to find a messenger of the armored reconnaissance company (SpähKp) that had gotten there on his motorcycle with sidecar to get the mail. In addition to the mail bag, also he found room for me in the sidecar, and at night, around 19:00 hours we were back in Utta where I reported to my boss, Leutnant Schliep.

Overall my trip to the PzWerkstatt was 600 km and other 700 km back to Utta, within 15 days on the road. Meanwhile my vehicle had been declared again serviceable.

5. Chalchuta.

On October 18, 1942 I went with my reconnaissance vehicle armed with a 20mm cannon in the direction of Chalchuta, after marching 30 kilometers reached this outpost of the division and I reported to Ofw Lorenz. The base of about 8 kilometers long and 4 kilometers wide was on the road linking Astrakhan and Elista with a W-E orientation and was located about 100 kilometers west of Astrakhan. To the north run a route leading to Stalingrad and to the south to Baku on the Caspian Sea coast. The strategic importance of the place was that there was one of the few good freshwater wells.

In Chalchuta, in a monthly basis, were relieved each other strong battle groups of both regiments of infantry (belonging to the 16 ID Mot), reinforced with a company of antiaircraft guns of 88 mm, a battery of artillery, a tank company, engineers and two light armored reconnaissance vehicles.

Ofw. Lorenz led the patrol heading north and Fw. Welsmayer the patrol heading south. My armored vehicle joined the north patrol. Daily, even at dawn, we patrolling northwards, beyond the T-34 which had been destroyed by our 88 weeks ago. In those days there was no sign of the enemy and we achieve our alarm stations. Usually we did a short break in a winter farm and talked with the Kalmucks who tended his flocks there. We gave them soup and corncobs in exchange for milk and eggs. There was also a good source of water, without which there could not be cattle. The stables were 80 meters long and 20 meters wide, made of wood with thatched roof and open sides. The Kalmyks were cutting the grass on the prairie and brought up there to cover the sides with hay. The cattle depended on the amount of hay could be stored there during the cold days of winter. Once harvested the hay and emptied all the water sources, they folded their tents and moved to another barn.

We spent many hours watching the ground behind a sand dune, burning in the sun. A second armored vehicle commanded by Uffz. Fritz Möbius came from Chalchuta and we made a great team.

On October 25, 1942 our patrol armed a wooden tent, which had been donated by our Finns allies. It was round, having a diameter of 7 meters and its side walls were vertical. We still dig one meter deep in the desert ground to be better protected against the fragmentation. On the same night we'd done. The tent also included a small oven, which worked primarily with camel dung and it was used for heating.

Here we also saw that our Kalmucks who had lived for weeks in the winter blocks about 10 km north of CHALCHUTA, had gone with their flocks and only stayed there two old men, who were hooking the camels to their cars and finally loaded their leather tents. The tracks led their flocks to the north, ie in enemy territory.

Two positions ahead we received the order to inspect a winter barn with an infantry Platoon and destroy it. I went forward and discovered that the place already had been occupied by Russian soldiers. Ofw Lorenz came with his vehicle to my right and the same height, and both opened fire on the building. At one point we faced a Soviet soldier with his hands up, which seemed to appear from nowhere. Then came a shot from somewhere and hit on the head of Lorenz, who fell on the vehicle. Then we shot at the winter barn till set it on fire. Lorenz was transported to the main aid station in Chalchuta, but he died that night due his serious injuries. Leutnant Schliep sent a motorcycle, and I had to inform to Utta. There I received the order to take over the patrol.

The next day, October 29, 1942, a patrol of two vehicles arrived at the winter barn which was completely burned but free of enemies. The Soviets had taken away their dead and wounded. As of November 1, 1942 every patrol had contact with the enemy and the Red air force became more active. In one of its attacks to Utta Gefr. Zörkler was killed in action; in that attack and due to the defensive fire, the Russian planes dropped its bombs out of the strongpoint.

5. Chalchuta.

On November 3, 1942 we marched nearly three kilometers from the Point of contact 14 against three trucks carrying 60 Soviet soldiers to the west, as we were driving through the desert terrain those vehicles managed to escape north.

As our own air force had become increasingly blind, one of our aviators bombed the south patrol led by Weismayer. When we met on the evening of November 4, 1942 to inform the GR 156, Gustl Weismayer managed to speak with the pilot on the phone and gave him a severe reprimand, to which the airman replied only: understood captain! (Jawohl, Herr Hauptmann).

On November 8, 1942 we heard a speech to the soldiers from the Feldherrnhalle where we reported on the impending collapse of the Russian colossus; more for us Lili Marleen was still waiting outside the door of the barracks. Each time it was announced the end of the enemy, everything started over again and the recovery time was shorter each time.

5. Chalchuta.

On November 9, 1942 the reconnaissance vehicle of Mehringer broke down and it had to be towed 20 kilometers to Utta. Now we must carry out the scheduled patrols with only two vehicles.

Already on November 13, 1942 the division knew about an upcoming enemy attack when the Kampfgruppe of GR 60 under Maj. Lindner destroyed the Soviet strongpoint "Comintern". In a captured commissar was found a map on which were marked in blue the existing bases and red arrows indicating where the future strongpoints would be located.

On November 14, 1942 when we were ready to resume the journey, we were alerted that about 3 kilometers north of our position the Soviets had seized a truck of one of our supply trains. A few minutes later we were on the scene and track the truck, behind the next hill we saw about 100 Russians dragging the vehicle to their lines. We opened fire and they all fled. We contrived to tie the truck to the armored radio vehicle and brought it back. As it was the second attack, the supply columns were prohibited from leaving Chalchuta without a light armored vehicle (Spähwagenschutz) escort.

5. Chalchuta.

On November 15, 1942 a new patrol was sent which had the task, if possible to capture prisoners. Near the point of contact 18 the patrol sighted three Russian trucks heading west and opened fire till burn them; the crew of six surrendered. Upon returning to our lines along a cart path of the Kalmucks, 1 kilometer before the German lines, we feel a tremendous noise and the right front wheel of the Radio vehicle (funkwagen) flew through the air. It was a German mine which had been planted the night before, luckily none of us nor the prisoners were injured. It resulted in a lot of discussions with the GR 156.

The next day came a new Radio vehicle (Leader "papa" Klas) and a vehicle armed with a 20mm cannon (Fritz Möbius) from the workshop, the former funkwagen was totally damaged and was not repairable. Rudi Hoffmann who was sitting on the side where the mine exploded suffered a concussion and has since been called "Rudi headaches."

While General Henrici had been replaced and moved to a course in Germany and the November 17, 1942 came his replacement, Gerhard Graf v. Schwerin, who had been awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross.

5. Chalchuta.

We went on patrol again on November 18, 1942 following the old path, initially without any incident. Before nightfall the patrol moved further west, reporting that further to the north of the P 1 a lot of Russians had dug in the ground steppe. This place was just 4 km north of the Highway Utta - Chalchuta. Upon returning to Chalchuta it was received the order stating the next morning, we had to return to the area with a motorcyclist Platoon (Kradschützenzug). The night passed quietly. Next morning we met with the motorcyclists who were waiting for us on orders of a captain (Hauptmann).

In those days the GR 156 had been relieved by the GR 60. Brief coordination meeting and then we marched in order to reach the P1 from the south. Following a path of the Kalmyks, we reached the point trigonometric -3.7 and there within some 40 meters a Soviet soldier jumped out of the track. The Hauptmann ordered the motorcyclists to reconnoiter the steppe to the right.

When the first motorcycle with sidecar and three riflemen surpassed the reconnaissance vehicle flew through the air after stepping on a mine. The Pkw (light vehicle) of the Hauptmann had stopped almost over another Russian mine so we went backwards along the trail and the motorcyclists picked up in a canvas the remains of his three ill-fated comrades. We follow the path towards another OP further to the east.

5. Chalchuta.

North of Chalchuta the motorcyclists returned to their defensive position and we returned of our patrol at sunset. After hearing "Lili Marlene" we took a rest. We heard a few shots somewhere but then the shots turned much closer, so we were alarmed and ran to the armored vehicle.

The vehicle was under a tarp with three clamps for protection against rain and when I was about to release the first clamping, I saw a line of soldiers with fixed bayonets who marched against the anti-aircraft position. The situation was confusing until one of them put his bayonet on my chest and shouted something in Russian that did not understand a word and the only thing I could think of was to answer with a curse in Russian "Jop Twoyu Matl" (give it to your mother) then withdrew the bayonet, we briefly looked each other and he continued the advance. The Soviets came to about 100 meters from the anti-aircraft position and a close-range combat ensued there. Some vehicles began to burn illuminating the night horribly. I was glad to have my booty overcoat for it was very similar to the Soviets.

Quickly I remove the cover of the vehicle and saw the gunner of a quadruple machine gun took his place and opened fire with all weapons at the Soviets who were approaching there, but shortly afterwards he died pierced by two bayonets. For a short period of time without seeing the Soviets my men set the vehicles ready for action, the commander of the radio vehicle, Uffz "papa" Klask was wounded in the neck by a stray bullet but he survived. I would not enter immediately into combat for fear of wounding a comrade so we moved about 70 meters westwards to a 20 mm anti-aircraft position which was fighting there.

Then we brought support to an infantry platoon which had organized a defensive cordon. With Fritz Möbius agree that his 20-mm artillery vehicle and the vehicle radio should go to Utta and contact Oberleutnant Schleicher there. This was achieved just before the Russian tanks blocked the area. In the meantime Oberleutnant Schleicher had organized a blocking position and might even reject the Soviet attack during the night.

Although it was clear to me that I should remain in Chalchuta in order to avoid for my people the nickname of "cowardice before the enemy." I took the vehicle to a ravine to take cover and soon the fight began again. About 70 meters we spotted our tent and the vehicle which patrol Weismayr left there; from the turret of that vehicle we got fire and soon we began to shoot at everything that moved ahead of us taking advantage of the abundant ammunition of 20 mm we found in the anti-aircraft position. When nothing moved in front of us we left the depression and moved on to the anti-aircraft position.

From the SW appeared a lone Pz Kw IV along with a handful of Army soldiers belonging to the anti-aircraft position, also appeared Gustl Welsmayr. Only the driver of the light armored vehicle armed with the 20 mm cannon was missing in action, but soon reappeared telling he had been captured by the Russians when he could not start the engine of the vehicle; though he later managed to escape and camouflaged among the dead in action.

Hello to all :D; the end.............................

Operations on the Kalmuck Steppe - 1942.

5. Chalchuta.

6. Withdrawal.

The Russian main attack fell on the field hospital where all who could not flee were murdered, then went on the anti-aircraft position. The anti-aircraft battery suffered 29 KIA and many more were wounded. The artillery men buried their dead with the help of the prisoners and repaired a cannon of 88 mm just in time to repel a Soviet attack on Chalchuta coming from the north with tank support. This attack was repulsed at 11:00 hours.

Before midnight a courier brought the order that the strongpoint of Chalchuta should be abandoned before dawn, the retreat will be west-northwest with two mechanized patrols on both sides. At 3:45 hours the light armored vehicles crossed in row through the street open by engineers across the own minefields.

At sunrise, between 04:00 and 05:00 hours the flank guard was 1 km south west of the minefield; the vehicles of the 16 ID (Mot) were traveling to the north towards Utta and to the south the Soviet tanks were lined up with its guns pointing northwards and the vehicles' leaders sat in the turret watching with binoculars. Towards Utta was heard loud noise of battle, but it turned out to be that the GR 156 had launched a counterattack with tanks to facilitate the withdrawal. The vehicles which left Chalchuta were directed to Jaschkul.

On November 22, 1942 the Russians approached up to 20 km of Utta and against the 28 Guards Division, the 6th Armored Brigade and the 152nd Motorized Brigade, the Germans could only oppose about 1500 men with a dozen guns of 50 mm and 88 mm. But the High Command ordered the 16 ID (Mot) to leave Utta and defend to the last the cornerstone of Jaschkul. That same day the division was subordinated to the 4 Pz Army of General Hoth, which should set up a new front on the line Tundutov - Jaschkul.
